 Embarrassed
Once I get started on stadia, I can't really stop: an unabashed stadia nerd. My wife can confirm that at one stage on Sunday evening I was counting the seats in one block in an attempt to calculate our stadium's true capacity!
And it took a great deal of willpower to resist writing a lengthy monograph on 'Watkin's Folly' when the conversation turned to 'things buried under football pitches' in the Bangkok Glass thread.

How true that can be? Sisaket in negotioans with Kevin Phillips from Birmingham? Jesus, that would be a blast for the Thai League.

It probably means someone at Sisaket said: "Hey! Wouldn't it be great if we signed Kevin Phillips!" and that was it!

Muang Thong win battle against Chonburi to go top

Quote

Chonburi’s Baga has a shot at goal yesterday.

Defending champions Muang Thong United thrashed Chonburi FC 4-1 in an ill-tempered match last night to overtake the Sharks at the summit of the Thai Premier League .

Chonburi got off to a good start and took the lead after two minutes when Muang Thong defender Jetsada Jitsawad sent the ball into his own net while trying to clear a Jules Baga header.

The goal was a wake-up call for Muang Thong who piled pressure on the 2007 champions before a packed Yamaha stadium.

Chonburi goalkeeper Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool made several good saves but he could not stop a penalty kick from Dagno Siaka.

Referee Chaiya Mahaprab awarded the penalty to the home team after Chonburi defender Natthaphong Samana had been adjudged to have fouled Muang Thong midfielder Datsakorn Thonglao in the 28th minute.

Replays showed Datsakorn appreared to have dived. Upset by the decision, Chonburi staged a fierce protest and it took several minutes before the game could be restarted.

Nine minutes after the interval, Datsakorn rubbed salt into Chonburi's wounds when his corner kick found Kone Mohamed who headed home from close range.

Worse was to come for the visitors two minutes later when Baga was clearly tripped in the area but referee Chaiya refused to give a penalty.

Soumahoro Yaya scored Muang Thong's third goal after 68 minutes and Teerasil Dangda completed the rout four minutes later.

Chonburi coach Jadet Meelarp said his team should have been awarded a penalty although he declined to criticise the referee.

The contentious decision in this match came as TOT-CAT officials and players wait to see if they will get a lengthy ban and fine for attacking a referee in a recent match.

At the Thai-Japan stadium, strugglers Bangkok United drew 1-1 with BEC Tero Sasana. The visitors went in front through Anon Sangsanoi in the 32nd minute and Sattrupai Srinarong equalised for the Bangkok side in the 71st minute.

At the I-Mobile stadium, Buriram PEA's new coach Attapol Bussapakom got off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Osotspa M-150 Saraburi.

Suchao Nutnum (9th) and Pirat Tubgetkaew (48th) were on target for the hosts.

At Phichit, TTM could only manage a scoreless draw with Thai Port.

Why did both teams wear their away strips? If red and blue constitues a kit clash, the Merseyside derby will look a lot different from now on  Smiley.

It looks more like Arsenal v Stoke City rather than Muangthong v Chonburi!

It has something to do with a fortune teller who gave some advice re: colours and numbers before our massive upset win in the AFC :-)

I wrote a letter to the BP last season complaining about some of the statements made by Tor. To their credit, it did get published.

I was new to the Thai football scene then. This season, I saw Tor announcing who were the title racers and relegation fighters based on league positions  after three games (two for some teams, one for Tero!)  and realised he was a plonker.

Old Tor Chittinand obviously doesn't think much of Miroslav Toth.  Cheesy

Pattaya keep early run going

Surprise package Pattaya United continued their good run in the Thai Premier League yesterday when they secured a 3-1 away win at TOT-CAT.

Two goals from Cameroon's Ludovick Takam of Cameroon gave the Dolphins a comforatable with at the Yamaha stadium.

The visitors raced to a 2-0 lead when Takam scored his fifth and sixth goal of the season inside the first half hour.

Slovakia's Miroslav Toss pulled a goal back for TOT-CAT after 32 minutes only for Premwut Wongdee to restore a two-goal advantage for Pattaya just before half-time.

The hosts were without their coach Narong Suwannachote who is serving a four-match ban for ordering his men to stop playing during a protest at a recent game.

Pattaya, who narrowly beat the drop last season, are third with 18 points, one behind leaders Muang Thong United and second-placed Chonburi FC. However, the Dolphins have played two games more than the front-runners.

I would be ashamed making such mistakes. And I did already Sad

Nevertheless, at least you have to credit BP for reporting about the TPL. While every time I check The Nation, theres no TPL coverage.

TPL Scores 1/6/10:

Samut Songkhram 0 - 1 Osotspa Saraburi

Buriram PEA 0 - 0 Bangkok United

* Buriram PEA are the only unbeaten team in the TPL, but they have drawn 7 out of 10 games.

* Sisaket are the only team yet to win a match this season.

If Buriram really want to go places this season, then they need to start killing off teams like Bangkok Utd.

Samut Songkhram bubble has burst, but with their good early season form it does look like they will still come mid table this year.

Sharks bite Navy to return to summit
Quote
Chonburi FC moved to top of the Thai Premier League yesterday after thrashing Navy Rayong 4-0 .

Therdsak Chaiman of Chonburi FC, right, celebrates after scoring against Navy Rayong yesterday.

After a scoreless first half, the Sharks went on a scoring spree with goals from Jean Marc Benny (two), Therdsak Chaiman and Ekaphan Inthasen in the second 45 minutes.

Chonburi have 22 points from nine games and Muang Thong have 19 points from eight matches. Muang Thong host Pattaya United today.

Relegation contenders Navy fought bravely in the first half of the Eastern derby as Chonburi tried to bounce back from last week's 4-1 loss at Muang Thong United.

But the visitors proved too much after the interval.

Benny eased his team-mates' nerves when he opened the scoring in the 52nd minute.

In-form veteran midfielder Therdsak doubled the scoreline with a close-range shot in the 68th minute.

The hosts tried to cut the deficit but could not break a steely defence marshalled by Thailand defender Kiatprawut Saiwaew, who was playing in his first game of the season.

The Sharks put the match beyond doubt when Ekaphan scored his team's third goal after 75 minutes. Benny completed the rout five minutes from time .

Cheerleaders from the league’s major sponsor help woo fans to the stadium .

Chonburi coach Jadet Meelarp said his men played well despite without without a number of suspended and injured players.
"From now on, we cannot make any mistakes and have to keep piling the pressure on Muang Thong," he said.
At Thephatsadin stadium, BEC Tero Sasana defeated SCG Samut Songkhram 2-1.
BEC got goals from Anon Sangsanoi in the seventh minute and Mario Neto in the 87th minute.
At Army stadium, Army lost 1-0 to the TOT-CAT with the winner coming from Tomas Kosar in the 66th minute.

BGB is now making the long, long trip to Buriram in his guise as BG Man. Can't wait to see the photos :-)
I'm making the far shorter journey to the Thunderdome in a few hours.

Well that was all a bit surreal to say the least. The whole Buriram palaver, I don't really know what to make of it all.

One thing is for sure, the stadium and the stadium grounds in particular are no where near as impressive as appears on TV, but the fans are very impressive (even if they are being paid to be impressive).

Seriously though, it was a great weekend, just a bit weird.

As for BG Man, well, I've got to do something to entertain myself, cos the team are shockingly inept this season.
The sooner we get Ney's fat wages and belly out of our team the better.

Can you elaborate on your thoughts re: Buriram? I freely admit I'm totally blinkered when it comes to all things Buriram so it's always useful to hear someone else's take on what's going on over there.

Sure, you're welcome to my thoughts, but to be honest, like I said, I don't know what to make of it all.
However, I did keep an open mind about them before I went as being a BG fan, it'd be a little hypocritical not to Wink

The Good.

Whether they are being paid or not, the fans put on an impressive display. The main stand must have housed about 10,000 and to see them ALL decked out and moving and singing in unison was a sight to behold.

The fans were very friendly and very approachable.

Buriram itself is a very nice place, I liked it a lot.

Tickets only 40 baht at the most, shirts are 250 baht.

The Bad

How genuine are most of the fans??? I didn't find out if they are paid to travel to away games or not but  they do buy the tickets for 40 baht max and they get 50 baht food vouchers for free...

The stadium is poor. Not nearly as impressive as it's made out to be. Similar to Rayong's in many ways but worse. We were light years away from the pitch for one, outside the running track there is a huge area of nothing before you reach the stands, which is very very dusty.

You cannot take a thing inside the stadium... not even water in a bag. Don't know why, you'd have to be an Olympic javelin thrower for anything to reach the players. It was baking (especially for those stupid enough to be wearing a lycra suit Wink) and we couldn't have any liquid at all.
There was a real big storm during the game which churned up all the dust and swirled it around the crowd. Fine, but we had no water and the dust was getting in peoples eyes and throats.

The parking was a case of anything goes in a big mud clearing. Imagine Glasonbury but with buses, songtaews, tractors and all sorts of other weird agricultural vehicles instead of tents and you have some idea.
Our coach was 90 mins trying to get out.

The Weird

Everyone within a 50km radius bar none was wearing a Buriram FC shirt on Saturday and a Buriram PEA shirt on Sunday. When I first arrived on Sat, I though it was good to see so many 'supporting' Buriram FC, then the next day the same people all had a Buriram PEA shirts on.
And I'm not just talking a few people, everywhere we went, old, young, male, female, ladyboys, soi dogs... they were all wearing the shirts, it was like they would be shot if they were seen without them on.
There is no way everyone would have genuinely brought a shirt, even at 250 baht. Clearly they were all distributed free with orders of when to wear them etc.

There was a large section of Buriram local BG fans that didn't travel up from Pathum Thani, I would estimate about 200. Nothing wrong with that, in fact it was great to see and meet new fans, but it's the first time that has happened to us anywhere near that scale.

And lastly it was just surreal seeing hundreds of government buses, songtaews, trucks n tractors and whatnot shipping in the 'fans' by the shed load. It really looked like they were being evacuated out of (or should I say into) a disaster area.

Well, that's my 2 cents worth, I still don't know what my opinion of them is, but out of the 15 or so away games I've been to with BG, this was the best all round trip (the match was decent too, but we were pathetic beyond words).

I've seen Buriram in Rayong. And frankly speaking I couldn't relly keep an eye on the fans as it made me feeling sick. It reminded me on some kind of styled dictatorship events. Needless to name such countries. Everything looked soo straight styled, in same colour. Everybody was doing the same. If the guys on the megaphone showed a red card, the whole bunch showed a red card. And so on on. That was really anoying for me to see.

Thanks very much BGB and Loko!  Smiley

Not being allowed to take water in is downright dangerous. When I go to watch Korat play Buriram F.C in Buriram in July I'll have my 15 month old daughter with me. Will she have to go without a drink in temperatures of 30+ for two hours? You can't buy drinks in the ground during the match or at half-time?

I'll always find the way they've 'attracted' fans rather tasteless and vulgar but I think it's kind of a cultural thing. Quite a few Korat fans I've talked to just see what's going on there as 'great promotion' and are rather envious of what's going on there.

I don't condemn them out of hand. Bussing in fans from around the city and its extremities to home games is something I've long said Korat should be doing. Even if you let them ride free on the bus, you more than make the money back at the turnstile and club shop. Charlton did something similar in England when they bussed in fans from across Kent.
And prices for Buriram F.C games start at 10 baht for adults. Again, something we should learn from instead of just charging a flat rate for the whole of the stadium no matter where you sit. Instead, we charge as much as some TPL teams (50 baht) and provide no transportation to an out-of-town stadium, and fans on the official webboard wring their hands and have big discussions as to why we don't get the same gates that Buriram and Surin do.

We'll be up there in a couple of weeks and, after reading that, I can't wait!!*

I wonder how many of those "fans" you saw on Sunday were at Bang Phra two years ago to watch PEA win the league? Wink

* If anyone from PEA is reading this, I'd be more than happy for you to pay for my petrol and my hotel bill. Smiley

Without wishing to get too prissy, I'm sure that the water ban must be against the Geneva Convention or something. Are any of us brave enough to report them.? Wink

When I first started going to Chonburi away games on the bus, it didn't cost anything. We got a bowl of rice, a bottle of water and free admission to all away grounds. I was never paid to go though.

I agree with Loko - I don't like this orchestrated chanting and cheering. However, PEA aren't the only ones who do it in this league.
