My mistake, the total prize money is "over 10 million baht" , the winning team gets 5 million.

Not sure what to make of this. A cynic might say it was yet another example of the PL/FAT milking the current popularity of the domestic game (which is already showing signs of cooling) to add to the Runners-up Cup, the Super Champ Regional Cup and the big four Super Cup. It just seems to have gone from one extreme to the other. For years we (and I'm thinking about former Provincial League clubs, here) had to make do with a twenty-game, five-month season. And now we have a 30-game season, FA Cup, League Cup and play-offs. It's nearly year-round football and most players in the RL are semi-pros with other jobs. Would be quite happy to see us not enter this.

This is just the FA Cup all over again isn't it?
Most RL teams don't bother with the FA Cup, but it seems they have been told to enter the League Cup.
Why can't the Queen's Cup be used to organise a competition like this. Is there any point to future Queen's Cup tournaments? What other tournaments will be next?

Pretty much except without non-league teams and an AFC Cup spot. What it all amounts to is another 5,000,000 baht for one of the top four.

I disagree, I think it's a very good idea. The reason many small teams don't enter the FA Cup is beacuse they don't get assiatance with travel expenses, etc. hopefully they will in this one.
It's also a good opportunity for the smaller clubs to get a big match. That will bring more fans, more exposure and the chance for lower league players to prove themselves. The big four will probably play reserve teams so they (the reserves) get a chance, too.
Vinnie, wouldn't you want to see Korat Vs Buriram PEA? I'd be very pleased to see Nonthaburi Vs Muangthong, for example.

If we don't make it to the play-offs then winning this competition would mean nothing to me let alone playing Provincial Electricity in the first round.

I must admit that I'm not too excited by this news. Why introduce a new competition now? Why can't they sort all this out at the start of the season? Announcing the TPL second leg fixtures when the first leg is coming to an end is just as ridiculous. And dropping in national team matches at the drop of a hat.
I'd probably have been more in favour if we'd have known about this from day one. With clear dates for the FA Cup rounds, League Cup rounds and a full set of league fixtures.
I think that this has more to do with politics than football. Just bear in mind whose company sponsors the FA Cup. The League Cup is obviously attempting to steal that competition's thunder.

The problem is though Greg, is that why couldn't they do this for the FA Cup? If they couldn't do it for one tournament, then why start another tournament? I know you think it is all good news and the prospect of having TPL teams taking on RL teams for instance, but unfortunatly, ever since I have followed Thai football and looked back at the history aswell since the TPL was founded back in 1996 is that all these tournament seem to come and go. Personally, I just can't get my head around the fact that these tournaments are brought in on a whim. Especially this seaosn when all i currently hear is the need to get the TPL games in after a slow start to the season. I've said this before, but my local league is more organised than this. It just seems the guys in charge follow the money trail rather than thinking of the game. A few years ago I loved following the in's and out's of the Thai game (you will see from my early blog years). But just recently i feel it has gone overkill and i'm finding it hard to keep motivated about something that changes week by week. All other Asian leagues i follow outside of ASEAN anyway are soundly organised, you know when teams will play and they don't overload the domestic game. It's simple as that. But Thailand makes if too difficult. I don't know how newly converted Thai people to the domestic game get to follow it. But in these early years of professionalism and more supporters through the gates, they will only support realistically about 4 teams who can win anything. In 5 years time the domestic league will be gone again.

I agree with you and Dale that the timing seems inconsiderate. It would be far better to have introduced this next season. But we all know that this chopping and changing isn't restricted to football, it's Thailand to a tee. I don't think we should object to the tournament itself based on that.
But I still think it's a good thing to have the league cup for the reasons mentioned previously, though I also think the FA Cup should be better organised so all the lower league teams can enter.
Vinnie, short of injuries and suspensions - that are a risk in any game - Korat's promotion chances are not put at risk by playing in separate tournament are they? I still bet you'd love to see a big crowd at Korat to take on a big TPL side.

Tonight's attendance would suggest that the Chonburi football public aren't really interested in additional cup competitions. Certainly at the 3rd round stage.

Well thats settled then. FAT will play another tournament anyway. The only other tournaments i could really get behind are district tournaments that we have in the UK, such as the North Riding Cup or Liverpool Senior Cup for example. In Thailand, you could have the same sort of thing done on a regional basis which pits all teams from a province into one cup. These would all be done as and when the local FA's wanted to host them. Currently in Thailand, only areas that could be played right now would be Chonburi, Phuket and Khon Kaen. This in Thailand would give your school teams more of a chance of meeting a bigger near neighbour.

Even a home game against Muang Thong or Chonburi would only be a mildly entertaining diversion. We have three priorities this season: play-offs, play-offs, play-offs.

If the crowds at this week's FA Cup ties are anything to go by, the organisers will really need to work hard to sell this tournament to the public. It will be interesting to see how they promote it.

In nearly 47 years of following football, I have never wanted a team that I have been supporting to lose. Under any circumstances. I understand that clubs have priorities but winning games, in any competition, has to be the first one. Doesn't it? This modern trend for fielding weakened teams baffles me. Back in the 60's, 70's and 80's the top English teams, M*n U*d, Leeds & Liverpool, picked their best 11 for EVERY match. The Liverpool team of the 70's and 80's used to win every competition going using no more than 13 or 14 players all season.

First blow to the competition, only 57 of the 74 Regional league clubs are entering. Clubs notable by their absence include Chiang Mai and Buriram. Draw for the qualification round today at 14:00.

Those 17 non-participants in full:
North: Chiang Mai, Lampang, Chainat, Nakhon Sawan
Central: Lopburi, Saraburi, Ayutthaya
South: Ranong, Krabi, Satun, Pattani, Surat Thani
Issan: Yasothon, Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lamphu, Buriram
Bangkok: Bangkok Christian
It's interesting that more than half of those teams - maybe 10 or 11 - are play-off contenders. They presumably feel, as I suggested, that this competition is an unnecessary intrusion during the crucial run-in.

Qualification round organised into the regional divisions. We're at home to Loei on August 11th, the same date as all matches involving Northeast and Central teams. Northern and Southern fixtures are played on August 18th and Bangkok matches are played on August 4th, different to the original schedule which had the matches being played on July 26th - 31st.

Four of the top five Bangkok teams will play so it's still a good turnout. I think cash may play a part for many of those abstinent teams - Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Saraburi, and obviously Buriram strike me as perhaps the richer of the lower league teams. They don't need the cash! Then again, Nonthaburi have a few quid, too, but perhaps this reveals another reason why the Bangkok teams are happier to enter - they usually have less travelling to do.

It's the type of competition that makes more sense if you're a mid-table or lower RL team: You've had nothing to play for for months but this competition comes along and provides a bit of late-season interest. Of course, should our play-off bid fall apart I reserve the right to claim that this competition was always a priority.

That's brilliant!! Do you have any more details? Oldham once had a match at Sheffield United postponed when an unexploded WWII bomb was found next to Brammall Lane an hour or so before kick off.

Apparently there was some kind of explosion that took out two of the floodlights. According to my translation a transformer (the electrical type, not the Autobot type) exploded due to rain exposue and caused a small fire! They will play at 1530 next week so they obviously are not confident of a quick repair!

As said in the first post in this topic: "The first round will start on the 28th of August where Division 1 and Premier League Clubs will join the tournament and fixtures will be played home and away." But in Thailand everything can change very quick, so we just have to wait and see... Especially as there are already league fixtures scheduled for the 28th. More and more ridiculous. "Booze" up and brewery spring to mind. Again!!!!

Out of the sixteen matches played so far - all on Wednesdays - ten have kicked off at 15:30. All this promotion and they play games at that time midweek! There are some things about football in this country that I will never understand.

Kasetsart University were drawing 0-0 with Nonthaburi when they decided to walk off and not come back on. Therefore, the game was forfeited and Nonthaburi were awarded a 2-0 victory.
