Nonthaburi 0 BG 2 - report to follow.

Nonthaburi's ground was quite close for you to attend today, right?

I went with BKK73 to watch MTU's second XI against Samut Prakan. Fairly comfortable win, although Samut Prakan's late goal will probably put a spanner in the works of the reserve goalie's dream move to Real Madrid in January Smiley

As mackem said it was a second string MTU team. I reckon if they'd played their usual first XI the score would have been about 6-0. The 2nd goal from Nawaphol was a cracker. MTU should have no difficulties finishing it off in the return leg.

Nonthaburi V BG Highlights:

Byrne, Sylla and their first choice goalie all played. The only missing party I noticed was that tricky little number nine, but I don't know their squad very well.

It's not too far from the Thunderdome and is slightly closer to me, though in terms of travel time, Thepsadin/Supalachasalai is almost the same as I can get there with just one bus.
The only ground that I could really say is near my home is Rajpracha's Nonthaburi Provincial Stadium, and of course they are not using that right now. Fingers crossed for next season :-)

It was actually our 3rd choice 'keeper, but other than that, pretty much a full strength team, except the no. 9. Gbenga Ajayi was missing as you said and of course Sutee is still injured.

Peter Lang still can't get a game, surely he must in the return leg on Wednesday.

A football match or a trade exhibition? A depressing taste of things to come - if we do ever make it into the TPL - outside our stadium on Saturday.

I know. Even more dancing girls, more media exposure, bigger crowds, better players ... it will be terrible.

I guess it depends what you value in football. I'd prefer a club which plays in the bottom division but is truly connected to its local population, charges a reasonable amount for admission and merchandise and plays in a stadium within the city than a top-flight marketing machine. But then the team I support in England play in step 4 of non-league so all this modern football stuff is rather alien and tasteless to me.

I think I'm going to follow Nong Bua Lamphu next year! Wink

That's a fair comment. I knew someone who used to follow Fulham in league division 4 before they ventured upwards towards their current level. He used to go to every home and away game, like many others who followed lower league teams, and enjoyed it more than he enjoys the Premier League experience.

So, I know the angle you are coming from, but I don't think I'd choose Nong Bua Lamphu ... unless they get that dog tied up and the grass cut once in a while!

Maybe I don't have to look so far... www.footballkorat.com

At the end of the Club History section it says something like 'a real football club to be proud of for the people of Nakhon Ratchasima'. I wonder who that barb is aimed at!? And they plan to play at the Army Stadium - the most centrally located and easily accessed of all Korat's stadiums. Why don't I think of these things! Wink

Phitsanulok seem quite pleased with their little payday on Sunday so at least someone's happy with the format. However, I'm not sure how many will bother turning up for the second leg on Thursday. The fact that there isn't another (scheduled) home match until September 25th might persuade some to make the effort.

Most of the 2nd legs are now forgone conclusions. The idea of seeding the draw was fine but they should have played only one game instead of 2. I don't predict many fans will bother to turn up for the return fixtures.

I suppose the positives of playing 2 legs would be that it lets the bigger teams field some fringe and youth players, and for the supporters of the smaller teams it gives them a chance of a night out watching their favorites at Premier or Div 1 stadium.

Result of the day, Narathiwat turning round a 1-4 away loss with a 3-0 home win over Sakhon Nakhon to go through on away goals.

I suspected this might happen, given the length of the trip, and Narathiwat have been tough at home all season.

Don't ask me for a comprehensive write-up, because I honestly can't remember and I only had 3 pints of Leo at the BG v Nonthaburi game. It was a good battle and BG came away with a 4-0 win c/o of goals from Michael Byrne and some others. Sorry, I can't remember the other goalscorers, but I think Moussa got one and there were 2 others which I missed while I was spinning round in circles and shouting words I didn't understand. BG Man can probably provide a much more coherent report as he was much better behaved. Cheers!

Hats off to Bangkok United who recorded an impressive 7-0 win over Hat Yai for a comfortable aggregate victory.

Less impressive were Thai Port who squeezed through 4-3 on aggregate against Bangkok after being beaten 3-1 at home in the second leg.

Meanwhile Muangthong have just scored a late equaliser to make it 1-1 against Samut Prakan and regain the lead over the two legs at 3-2.

Chonburi also comfortably through to the next round after a 3-1 victory over Phitsanulok.

Port fielded a (mostly) second string side, and were given a bit of a scare. Leading by a penalty at halftime, they let Bangkok come at them in the second half, and conceded 3 goals, and were lucky not give up the 4th which would have put them out. Wasn't really following the conversations around me, but the Port fans seemed to lose patience with their team, and when Bangkok made it 3-1, about 80% of the fans around me cheered and were actively encouraging them to go on and get the winner.

Not sure whether or not they understood that 4-1 put Port out.

Maybe Korat should buy a place in the TPL and then their fans would be able to giggle at a third division team losing 7-0. Fast track promotion - You know it makes sense.

Re: the Songkla - Nakhon Phanom game: I went on the Songkla website last night looking for a reason for the postponement, but all the 'news' links led me to the webboard. However, I did find one post that listed all the results of the League Cup, plus a column for the winners. They had no result listed for the Songkla game, but Nakhon Phanom were in the aggregate winners' column.

Typo? or has anyone here found more details?

EDIT - Thai League Online also has Nakhon Phanom as one of the 31 teams into the last 32.

The tie of the round surely has to be the Latkrabang derby between Suvhambumi Customs v Thai Honda.   Shocked Not really it's BG v Chonburi. It will be a busy few days at the Leo Stadium with 2 visits of Chonburi and one of PEA within the space of a week.

According to Chonburi FC's website the first leg of the Bangkok Glass - Chonburi tie is being played on Wednesday 15 September and the second leg is in Chonburi on Wednesday 22 September. Might be true ...  Grin

In which case that makes for an 'interesting' 8 days following BG and Chonburi:

15 September       BG v Chonburi (TLC)
19 September       BG v Chonburi (TPL)
22 September       Chonburi v BG (TLC)

Hang on ... what's going on???

It actually says Chonburi are at home on 15 September and the return leg is at the Leo Stadium on 22 September. Doesn't that make a mockery of being drawn out of the hat first?!

Never mind, if the website dates are correct then a draw away from home would set it up nicely for the second leg.

Sriracha defeated BEC 4-2 at home in last years TPL, but still went down. These two games will show us what they have learnt from last years relegation.

I was watching the draw live on Thai League Online and the names came out in a very random fashion. Sometimes you'd get an away team, sometimes a home team, a match on Wednesday, a match on Tuesday. Most odd. However, Chonburi wrre definitely down as the away team in the first leg so I don't know why it's been switched.

As I said at the top of this page "Absolute f*cking joke of a competition".
Can't believe they're playing the next round as soon as next week.

Forget BG v Chonburi or the Lat Krabang derby. Surely game of the round has to be TTM Phichit away to Kalasin and Buriram-PEA on the 7th, a full 8 days before those two teams play their 2nd leg match from last round on the 15th.

Will TTM have to send a team to each ground, or split their squad and play 5 v 11? Or will TTM gamble on picking the winner, and send their team to just one venue, and hope it's the right one?

Vinnie - I can't believe you're calling this Cup a f*&@ing joke, with drama like this Cheesy

It's not a joke, it's not a drama. It is much more simply than that.  Simply Amazing Thailand!!

I realise that I'm setting myself up here but I think that this competition could actually turn out to be quite successful. Once they iron out all the teething problems it may prove to be very popular.

However, some sensible management is required at this point. Situations such as the one that wolfman has pointed out need to be avoided.

No I think so too. It's a good idea that was poorly timed and needs a little tuning. I think lower league teams should be seeded at home and only the first round proper should be two-legged.

Not quite sure what you mean by this, but I would like to have seen no seeding in the last round, so TPL teams could have been drawn together. The lower league team in each tie could have been the home team too. The beauty of cup competitions is that unfancied sides can go on a run. This was always less likely to happen with the RL teams all being drawn against higher league opposition, and the ties being played over two legs.

There are no AFC spots being played for here, so potential cup runs and 'cupsets' should be encouraged, shouldn't they?
