THAILAND were the first team to check into the semi-finals when they beat Philippines 8-4 in the inaugural Raja Muda Johor Cup beach soccer invitation in Desaru, Johor, yesterday.

Thailand, also with three wins, play their final group match against Laos today to decide the group winners.

Thailand scored through Prata Mansiri barely a minute into the match but Ricardo Batayola Becite equalised for a 1-1 score at the break.

Roel Jimena Gener then put the Philippines ahead but their joy was shortlived as Pitipong Kuldillok equalised.

Pitipong went on to score three more goals while 24-year-old Thai captain Saneh Lungkaew, Sarif Sainui and Pongsak Khongkeaw, all contributed one goal each.

Philippines' other goals came through Ronel Jemena Gener and Meliton Calivarra Pelayo.

RESULTS -- Group A: Myanmar 6 Brunei 2, Thailand 8 Philippines 4; Group B: Vietnam 10 Timor Leste 0, Laos 3 Myanmar 1.

TODAY -- Vietnam v Malaysia (10am), Philippines v Brunei (2pm), Thailand v Laos (3.15pm), Malaysia v Indonesia (4.30pm).

MALAYSIA shocked favourites Thailand 4-2 to emerge champions of the inaugural Raja Muda Johor Cup beach soccer tournament at the Desaru Golden Beach Resort in Johor yesterday.

The five-day invitational was held in conjunction with the Merdeka Day celebrations.

After a scoreless first period, Mazlan Suid put Malaysia ahead one minute after the restart. Thailand were stunned but things got worse as Kay Langkawong scored an own goal two minutes later.

Malaysia extended their lead with a superb strike by Hamidi Mohammad in the 20th minute and Wan Adremy Indra Wan Adnan seal the victory with the fourth goal in the 22nd minute.

Thailand fought back in the third period through goals from Sariff Sainul and Chairat Choemchan but it was too late to stop Malaysia from winning the US$8,000 (RM27,064) prize money.

Thailand received US$5,000 while third placed Indonesia pocketed US$3,000.

RESULTS -- S-Finals: Malaysia 2 Laos 1, Thailand 8 Indonesia 3.

Final: Malaysia 4 Thailand 2; 3rd placing: Indonesia 3 Laos 1
