BANGKOK (19 April 2010) - Thailand head coach Bryan Robson will have the chance to look at a batch of 25 new, young players this week as he look to Prepare a squad for the Asian Games Which Will Be Held in Guangzhou, China in November.

The squad of 25 players will attend the national call-ups at the Rajamangala Stadium.

"The players who got the call-up Were the Ones that I haven't had a chance to look at Seriously. Some of them are still young and do not get much opportunity to play in the Thai Premier League," said Robson (pix .)

"We'll try to arrange another training like this again in the Future, possibly in May. Then, we'll have warm-up games. One game on for sure is Against India at the beginning of September."

How does that work? Iraq enter and then withdraw when they see who there up against and Pakistan don't enter, but then enter after the draw.

Saudi Arabia don't seem to be in any group even though they entered!!

For what it's worth, FAT have announced that they've come to an agrrement with MTU and Chonburi over their U-23 players' availability, should these teams make the League and/or FA Cup finals. I don't know what the details are (or I haven't understood enough).

At the end of the story, is the list of warm-up fixtures.

2 Nov: Thailand v Qatar
(All at Thai-Japanese Stadium, Din Daeng)

7 Nov (5pm): Thailand v Pakistan

Graham Robers is the current manager of Pakistan. I'm sure Robbo and him will have a few beers after the game(or even during it) to reminisce about old times back in the 80's.

Thailand to play Turkmenistan
Quote
Thailand's Asian Games team will play a warm-up match against Turkmenistan on Tuesday.

The match kicks off at 5pm at the Thai-Japan stadium and entry is free.

It will be Thailand's only warm-up game before next month's Asiad in Guangzhou, China.

"It is a tremendous gesture by the Thai FA to let the fans watch it for free," said national coach Bryan Robson.

He said his men would have only one warm-up game because several players are still playing for their clubs in the FA Cup and League Cup.

At the Asian Games, Thailand are in Group F and will play Pakistan on Nov 7, Oman on Nov 9 and Maldives on Nov 11. The top two teams advance to the knockout stages.

Thailand have reached the Asian Games semi-finals four times but have yet won any medal at the quadrennial tournament.

Kosawat rescues Thailand
Quote
Thailand's Asian Games side could only manage a 2-2 draw with Turkmenistan in a warm-up match at Thai-Japan stadium yesterday.
The Thai U23 team had to come from behind twice to avoid a morale-shattering defeat in their only warm-up game before they kick off their Asiad campaign on Sunday.

National coach Bryan Robson rested some key players on the bench particularly those from Muang Thong United and Chonburi FC who have played several games for their clubs in recent weeks.

Turkmenistan dominanted the opening periods and deservedly went in front after 24 minutes when Tagaye Elman hit the ball home from close range.

The Thais tried hard to break the visitors' defence but lacked sharpness without the services of striker Teerasil Dangda.

Turkmenistan almost doubled the scoreline in the 40th minute but Boliyan Aleksandr's effort from a few yards out went over the bar.

Thailand's best chance in the first half came in the dying moments when Kirati Kaewsombat sent his header wide.

Three minutes after the interval, Kapfa Boonmatoon equalised for Thailand with a long-range drive.

The Thais improved and piled pressure on the visitors but Turkmenistan restored the lead after 59 minutes when Astanov Umidjan scored after a defensive blunder.

The Thais then threw everything at Turkmenistan who did well to foil their attack until the final moments.

Turkmenistan goalkeeper Alyhanov Rahmanbbard missed a corner allowing substitute Kosawat Wongwailikit to tap in the loose ball.

"I think in such a situation, we did well," said Robson.

"The Muang Thong and Chonburi players played in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday so we had to rest them.

"It was a good opportunity for me to see the new players in this match like Jakkraphan Pornsai and Kapfa Boonmatoon.

"They both played very well today."

The team are set to leave for Guangzhou, China on Friday and will play Pakistan in their opening game on Sunday.

The other two teams in Thailand's group are Oman and the Maldives with the top two sides advancing to the knock-out stage.

Robson upbeat about his men's chances
Quote

Thailand coach Bryan Robson is upbeat about his men's chances when they begin their Asian Games campaign against Pakistan tomorrow.

Veteran players Nataporn Phanrit, left, Suttinun Phukhom, centre, and Datsakorn Thonglao arrive in Guangzhou with the Thai football team yesterday.

The Thai team arrived in Guangzhou, China yesterday with all but one of their 20 players. Ekachai Sumre was called up to replace Kraikitti Inutane this week and is awaiting approval from the organising committee to join the squad.

Robson said he was excited to be at a tournament like the Asian Games and that he hoped Thailand would beat Pakistan.

"I hope that the Thai team will start the tournament with a win against Pakistan, although I know very little about them," said the former Manchester United star.

"The only thing I know about Pakistan is their coach, Graham Roberts, my former England colleague."

Roberts made six appearances for England while Robson played for the national team 90 times .

The other two teams in Group F are Oman and Maldives and Robson admitted he knew something about Oman but nothing about Maldives.

Nataporn Phanrit is Robson's only injured player and the defender will be rested against Pakistan. Sujarit Jantakon or Suttinun Phukhom will take his place.

Manager Anucha Nakasai said: "I'd like the team to win all three first round matches to top our group to avoid a strong team in the second round. Our aim is to reach the semi-finals and if possible win our first-ever Asian Games medal in football."

It is Roberts' first game in charge for Pakistan and the ex-Spurs and Chelsea defender said he is keen to take on his old England colleague.

"It's a bit of an experience for me but I'm looking forward to it," Roberts told the BBC.

"Against Robbo _ well, we'll both be wearing shinpads on the halfway line."

Roberts admits he knew nothing about his team when he agreed to take the job last month, and enlisted the help of former Pakistan captain Zesh Rehman, who is currently playing for League Two side Bradford City.

"At the moment they're saying that they turn up and it's lackadaisical. I've spoken to five or six of them and the players I've checked out are all keen and they want to play," he said.

The Thailand v Pakistan match will be televised live on NBT (Channel 11) at 6pm .

Thailands squad does look strong to me. I don't know what any other nation is sending, but I would actually be unhappy if we didn't make the semi's.

If we fail to do well here, then i do fear for the future.

The point i'm trying to make is that this Thailand squad does seem to be quite experienced and most of the lads have been brought into the full squad recently, so if they fail here, then I'm not sure what the future holds for this current crop.

6-0 first up vs Pakistan.

I was switching back and forth between cricket, this match and Chiang Mai v Buriram, so didn't see all the goals.

However, I know Teerasil Daengda got 2, and Datsakorn Tongklao and Kiriti Keawsombut got at least 1 each.

Thais thump Pakistan 6-0
Quote
GUANGZHOU, China - Bryan Robson gave former England teammate Graham Roberts a harsh introduction to life as Pakistan boss when Thailand whipped Pakistan 6-0 in the teams' opening match at the Asian Games on Sunday.

The ex-Spurs and Chelsea defender was in charge for the first time since being appointed temporary Pakistan coach, and it wasn't a pretty sight.

Thonglao Datsakorn and Teerasul Dangda both scored twice in the under-23s match, while Anawin Jujeen and Kirati Keawsombut also got on the scoresheet as the Thais got their medal quest off to an emphatic start.

Sunday's football action kicked off the world's second-largest sporting event after the Olympics, five days ahead of the Games' official start on November 12.

Twenty-four teams are taking part in the under-23s tournament, with the top two and four of the best third-placed sides from the six groups advancing to the round of 16.

It wasn't so emphatic from defending champions Qatar, who opened their account with a 0-0 draw against Singapore.

Former Senegal and UAE coach Bruno Metsu is at the Qatari helm and is expected to match their achievement from four years ago in Doha, with Sunday's result not expected to go down well at home.

The United Arab Emirates, meanwhile, were held to a 1-1 draw by Hong Kong.

But Kuwait, Oman and Uzbekistan got their tournament off to winning starts with comfortable opening victories.

Kuwait, recently crowned champions of the West Asian football tournament in Jordan, proved too good for India in Group D, winning 2-0 with an early strike from Mohammad Alrashedi setting them on their way.

Alazemi Khaled ensured the three points with a fine finish in the 53rd minute.

Uzbekistan cruised past Bangladesh 3-0 in Group E, with first-half goals from Kenja Turaev and Odil Ahmedov putting them firmly in charge before Ivan Nagaev added a late third.

In Group F, which also features Thailand, Oman beat the Maldives 3-0, but they made a meal of it, with two late goals giving the scoreline respectability against the island minnows.

Al Moatasim Al-Mukhaini gave the Gulf side the lead on 21 minutes but they failed to capitalise until Abdallah Ai Saadi Waleed made it 2-0 with just two minutes left and Abdulla Saleh Abdul Hadi added a third in injury time.

Asian arch-rivals Japan and China, meanwhile, face each other in a potentially explosive Group A game on Monday amid a simmering diplomatic row and a history of bitter rivalry between fans.

Fans of the two teams will be separated while cameras, banners and bottles containing any liquid will be banned to prevent any "untoward situation", the Japanese consulate-general in Guangzhou said on its website Sunday.

The warning comes as tensions between the Asian giants persist following Japan's arrest of a Chinese trawler captain for allegedly ramming Japanese coastguard ships near disputed islands in the East China Sea in September.

At the Asian under-19 football championships in China last month, Japan's squad were booed and one spectator snatched their national flag from ceremony personnel while their national anthem was played before a match.

Also Monday, South Korea take on cross-country rivals North Korea.

Results:

Group D: Kuwait 2 India 0; Qatar 0 Singapore 0

Group E: Uzbekistan 3 Bangladesh 0; UAE 1 Hong Kong 1

Group F: Maldives 0 Oman 3; Thailand 6 Pakistan 0

BTW, does any one think that kit is awful. I thought I was watching a Shirley Temple movie when I switched channels.

It did look like a bit of a throwback. For some reason, Thailand always seem to use a one-off Grand Sport kit for U23 comps (Asian Games, SEA Games).

Here are a couple of pics of the real new kit...

Vinnie, TLO still has the Oman game listed as 3pm tomorrow, to be shown on NBT (Channel 11), quite possibly the worst channel to watch football on in Thailand. Hopefully it will be simulcast on channel 3, like Sunday's match was.

Thailand aim to get result from Oman
Quote
Thailand aim to get a result against Oman today in an attempt to top their group in the Asian Games football tournament in Guangzhou.

The Group F match kicks off at 3pm and will be showed live on NBT (Channel 11).

Thailand are brimming with confidence after opening their campaign with a 6-0 win against Pakistan while Oman beat Maldives 3-0 on Sunday.

Oman are seen as Thailand's toughest opponents in the group stage. The top two teams from each of the six groups and the four best third-placed teams advance to the round of 16.

Thailand coach Bryan Robson will make a few changes to the line-up with defender Nataporn Phanrit expected to start after recovering from a head injury.

Nataporn will partner Suttinun Phukhom in the heart of the defence. The duo are two of the three overaged players alongside midfielder Datsakorn Thonglao.

Teerasil Dangda and Kirati Keawsombat will lead the attack with Datsakorn playing behind them in midfield.

"It will be a big test for our boys," said Robson. "I want them to top the group to avoid a strong team in the second round."

But the English coach admitted that he had little information about Oman.

"I understand that we have a tape of them playing against Maldives but I have not yet got it," he said after yesterday's training.

Team manager Anucha Nakasai is now confident that Thailand will win their first-ever Asiad medal in football.

"We won the first match beautifully and this makes the players feel confident," he said.

"Our target is to win a medal and I feel more and more confident that we will reach our goal."

Worawi Makudi, president of the Football Association of Thailand, said the team will get 500,000 baht for a win and the bonus may increase in the knock-out stage.

"I am confident that our players will give their all. We are not underdogs to any team," he said.

"I have told the players that they must try to win and entertain the Thai fans in the stadium."

In today's other Group F game, the Maldives take on Pakistan.

1-1. Oman had a man sent off after 20 mins. 'Disappointing' is the only word for it.

I didn't have a problem with NBT's coverage of the game today. There was pre-match, halftime and post-match analysis, and they didn't go to adverts during the match. But the Chinese cameramen covering the game should be sacked. Absolutely dreadful. The worst camera work I think I've ever come across.

Thailand Held to a Disappointing Draw by Ten Man Oman
Quote
Bryan Robson’s Thailand were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Oman in the group stages of the Asian Games.

Oman are ranked slightly higher than Thailand by FIFA but the initiative was handed to the Thai team when Oman captain Mohamed Saghayar Jaber was dismissed after only 20 minutes.

Jaber tangled with Teerasil Dangda and the Thai striker went down. Although the incident was a long way from the Oman goal the referee deemed the defender to have prevented a clear goalscoring opportunity and showed him a straight red.

Up until that point the closest that Thailand had come was from a well struck Wichaya Dechmitr free kick which was tipped over the bar. After Jaber’s dismissal Robson’s team made their numerical advantage tell to dominate the remainder of the game.

After 26 minutes Dangda went down in the penalty area after some intelligent link up play with Datsakorn Thonglao. The referee felt that the contact had been insufficient to warrant the award of a penalty and waved away the striker’s protests.

Dangda had a glorious chance to put his side ahead when he combined well with Wichaya Dechmitr and burst through on goal only to be denied by a fine save. The rebound fell kindly for him but with the goal at his mercy he somehow contrived to drag his shot wide.

Thonglao, who like Dangda scored twice in the 6-0 victory over Pakistan, had a very presentable chance of his own after 38 minutes but blazed wastefully over the bar after the ball had fallen kindly for him in the penalty area.

It was all one way traffic by this stage with ten man Oman showing minimal attacking ambition. It seemed only a matter of time before Thailand found the breakthrough and it duly arrived on the stroke of half time.

Anawin Jujeen got to the right hand touchline and pulled the ball back for Thonglao who quite simply couldn’t miss. The goal was no more than Thailand deserved after subjecting the Oman defence to almost constant scrutiny.

There was still time for a late twist when, with the seconds ticking away in first half injury time, Oman were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Thailand penalty area. Ahmed Hadid stepped up and curled an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner of the net leaving highly rated Thai goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan rooted to the spot.

The second half started with Thailand once again in the ascendancy and the first chance fell to Thonglao on 53 minutes. He was played in with a defence splitting pass by Dangda only to be denied by the Oman keeper.

Disaster almost struck for Thailand after 64 minutes when, completely against the run of play, Walid Al Saadi found himself bearing down on goal. He should have given his side an undeserved lead but instead poked his shot wide of the right hand post.

Thailand continued to press but, unable to forge clear cut chances, were all too often forced to try their luck from range. Dangda came closest, grazing the top of the crossbar with a 25 yard drive.

The frustration was etched across the faces of the Thai players as the final whistle sounded. While the emphatic nature of the win over Pakistan means that a first place finish is still within their grasp this was a match which Robson’s team could and should have won.

Thailand’s final group game against Maldives is scheduled for Thursday with Maldives and Pakistan in action later tonight.

Thailand 0-0 Maldives
Oman 2-0 Pakistan

Oman top the group with 7pts, followed by Thailand (6), Maldives (2) & Pakistan (1)

Thailand's match in the round of 16 is vs 2nd Group B (Iran 6pts, Turkmenistan 3, Vietnam 3, Bahrain 0). That group will decided on Saturday (IRN v VIE, TKM v BHR).

Thailand dominated the first half, and could have been at least 2 up by halftime. Maldives made more of a contest in the second half, as Thailand failed to create genuine chances. The exception was a scramble which saw the Maldives keeper make 2 or 3 good saves in succession. The injection of Datsakorn Thongklao with 15 or 20 mins to go sparked Thailand in to life, but despite hitting the bar, and having a number of chances in the closing stages, they were unable to score.

Although Thailand have made the next round, I am rather disapointed in how they have made it. 2 draws. Not really what I expected from this current crop of Thai players.

Did the 6-0 mauling of Pakistan make the players think they were to good, or are they saving there best for later. Later will be much tougher though, but i guess at age restricted level, anything can happen.
