When I saw the squad a few days ago, I was shocked seeing those 3 strikers nominated. And I thought how we can score in Iran?

Maybe Robson aims to find a scoreless draw and hopes the same result in Jordan's stadium . 55++  Grin

not really. he failed to impress. But sometimes you could see his abilities. I think as of today, most of the Bayern fans wouldn't even remember him.

Robson admitted to saying 'tougher now' for playing a full strength Iran team?

What was he expecting? How many international teams play a under strength side? With Iran's history, if they don't beat Thailand on Wednesday,  then there coach could get sacked, and thats even thoguh they have already qualified. Of course the coach was always going to play a strong squad against us! With a defeat, this will be Robson's excuse!

From todays Post :

Another surprise is former SEA Games coach and ex-assistant national coach Steve Darby is with the Thai team.

Following Thailand's shock first-round exit at the SEA Games in Laos in December, the FAT stripped him of his role with the national side and appointed him a lecturer.

The FAT appointed Attapol Bussapakom to replace Darby as assistant national coach.

I think Attapol can do the job as he is a former Muang Thong United coach who knows a lot of players.

Worawi Makudi, president of the Football Association of Thailand, must take action against Darby for his disobedience.

No, they 'stripped him of his role' nearly two months later after the King's Cup.

Another badly written article, notwithstanding the inaccuracies. Just a great big list of one-sentence paragraphs.
And does he seriously think that Darby is out there without the FAT's knowledge?!
Keep up the good work, Tor!

IRN 1-0 THA - Thais undone in Tehran

Quote
TEHRAN – A late goal from Javed Nekounam secured a narrow 1-0 win for Iran over Thailand in their final qualifying game for the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011™ at Azadi Stadium on Wednesday.

The Osasuna star struck in the 90th minute to secure all three points that eases the pressure on under pressure Iran coach Afshin Ghotbi.

The Iranians had already secured their place in the finals but that did not change their approach to the game as they clearly looked to win from the start while Bryan Robson's Thailand were packing the defence and looking to attack on the counter.

The hosts carved out the first chance after nine minutes when Mehrzad Madanchi passed to Ehsan Haj Safi, who crossed from the left and the ball eluded Thailand goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan but the last defender cleared off the line.

However, despite that promising start, chances for either side dried up and it was not until the 36th minute before the next effort of note was registered when Andranik Teymourian's free kick was deflected by a Thai player before Al Wahda's Madanchi collected the loose ball and fired a left-footed drive that was saved by Kawin.

Nekounam headed weekly onto the goalpost from Seyyed Jalal Hosseini's cross six minutes before the break while Iran again came close soon after when Ali Karimi dribbled through three Thai defenders and passed to Madanchi, who stumbled when taking his shot and the danger passed.

Iran continued to dominate after the restart as Sepahan’s Ehsan Haj Safi fired a left-footed drive that goalkeeper Kawin did well to push away to safety before Madanchi's tame effort failed to trouble the shot-stopper.

With 20 minutes left, the home fans started to make their frustrations known and it seemed to spur the Thais and they produced their best chance soon after when Nataporn Phanrit free-kick was expertly palmed away for a corner by Mehdi Rahmati.

Karimi continued to cause all sorts of problems for the Thai defence and he worked space for himself 10 minutes before time and crossed for Karim Ansari Fard, whose header shaved the crossbar.

It seemed as though the game would end in a draw but Iran snatched a winner in stoppage-time when Esteghlal right winger Khosro Heidari crossed for Nekounam and the midfielder directed a header into the back of the net .

An irresistible lost goal .

Robson laments lack of attack
Quote

TEHRAN – Bryan Robson admitted Thailand need to improve their potency in front of goal after they failed to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011™ finals following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Iran at Azadi Stadium on Wednesday.

The visitors needed to win to snatch a place at the finals in Doha and although they held the hosts for the vast majority of the game, a lack of goal scoring threat meant they were only ever going to secure a point at best.

In the end, Javed Nekounam's last gasp strike secured all three points for Iran, who finish top of Group E with Jordan claiming second place after beating Singapore 2-1.

“It is very upsetting not to be in the finals of the tournament,” said Robson (pictured).

“The team has had many problems since I arrived here, I did my best to resolve these problems but in the end I could not find a solution to the problems of my offence.

“Iran are a very strong team, they were both technically and physically better than us and this superiority accounted for the victory they gained. I wish them all the best in the tournament in Qatar.

“I am hopeful Thailand's young talents can some day resolve their problems with regards to scoring. We really had big problems due to poor finishing.“

Iran coach Afshin Ghotbi hailed his players' fighting spirit as they picked up their fourth win in qualifying.

The Iranian fans had become frustrated in their inability to break down the Thais but the players dug in before Nekounam grabbed the reward for their endeavours.

“My team consists of both young talent and veteran players,” said Ghotbi.

“We had a tough job against Thailand today, they were mainly thinking about defending and breaking on counter attacks. My players were also really exhausted as all of them had only recently completed their club duties.

“My players were experienced enough not to be distracted by the crowd and they finally got the reward for their perseverance by scoring the winner in stoppage time. The late goal from Nekounam is part of football and kept everyone waiting until the very last minutes of the game.

“There has been a very good atmosphere amongst my players during recent days and that also helped the team succeed.”
