The winner of the Thailand Premier League 2008 now know who they will play in the re-vamped Champions League next year.
V-League champions Binh Du'ong who were crowned champions yesterday.
A one-legged game will take place on 29th Feb with the winners going on to play Singapore S-League champions (to be determined) or the winners / runners up of this years AFC Cup (to be determined).

I've also realised I stated the game will be played on 29th Feb, but that date doesn't exist next year, so possibly on 28th Feb instead. |

Even though we went out in the group stages I'm looking forward to the knockout rounds. I'd like to see Gamba Osaka do well. It will be interesting to see how Adelaide fair.

I too would like to see Gamba do well, they seem to have been one of the most consistenet Japanese teams over the years, and it would be good to say, ''that could have been Chonburi!''.
After that, i hope, that the Japanese teams struggle, i don't really want to see 3 teams from the same nation in the semi's. And then my reservations on Adelaide, well i'd like to see them fail and show Australia, that Asia is not an easy compeition like so many predicted.
Love to see a Kuruvchi / Bunyodkor or Al Qadsia victory come the final.

I saw some of Al Qadsia v Urawa. It was 3-1 to Al Qadsia but Urawa got a second late on which may have just may have just tipped the balance of the tie in their favour. A very good game.

Just seen some brief highlights this morning in the UK, which quite simply is amazing to see it getting recgonised. Pity they couldn't show the earlier rounds, so thank you Eurosport. The action at atmosphere at some grounds was much more exciting than at is UEFA rivals last night.
I hope Al Qadsia make it through, and low and behold, i've discovered that J League football is shown in UK, Live every Saturday morning

Sky still show a bit of A-league, but its random when they show it, same for Football Asia which can be shown at 4am in the morning, you really need one of them Sky Digital thingys that record everything if your serious about catching some action. It's a pity, i feel the Asian market is something that is waiting to be tapped into really. |

Jordan, Kuwait and Syria seem to have missed the cut for entering sides into ACL 2009. Might just open a door for nations such as Thailand who made the deadline to enter more teams, or scrap the qualifying round altogether. Final announcement will be made on 25th November. Adelaide 0-2 Gamba (0-5 agg.): Gamba crowned kings of Asia [ADELAIDE – Brazilian striker Lucas scored twice in the first 15 minutes as Gamba Osaka downed Adelaide United 2-0 in the second leg of the AFC Champions League final to complete a 5-0 aggregate win.
Akira Nishino’s side followed in the footsteps of Urawa Reds to become the second Japanese side to win the AFC Champions League as they saw off a spirited Adelaide who ultimately came up short.
With Gamba leading 3-0 after the first leg, Lucas put the result beyond doubt with goals in the fourth and 15th minutes to hand Adelaide their first defeat at home in the competition this season while recording the biggest margin of victory in a final in the tournament’s history.
Roared on by the vast majority of the sold-out crowd, a pumped up Adelaide burst off the starting line and, for three minutes at least, looked set to test the J.League side.
But all the early industry was for nothing as Gamba dampened down the atmosphere of defiance within the Hindmarsh Stadium and all but secured the title with a goal in the fourth minute.
Lucas pushed the ball over the line after 17-year-old goalkeeper Mark Birighitti had parried Hayato Sasaki’s shot from the edge of the area, leaving the Brazilian with the simplest of tap-ins.
The goal effectively killed the game, although Kristian Sarkies tried to raise Adelaide’s spirits in the 12th minute only to skew his shot well wide of the target.
Three minutes later, Lucas grabbed his second to hammer the final nail into Adelaide’s title hopes as the former FC Tokyo striker took one touch to control Takahiro Futagawa’s through ball before poking perfectly beyond Birighitti.
Cristiano thought he had reduced the deficit in the 26th minute when he headed the ball over Yosuke Fujigaya and into the net, only for the assistant referee to rule the effort out for offside.
With Adelaide deflated and dejected, Gamba were in complete control as the half was completed but the home side’s pride and determination returned with the start of the second period.
Travis Dodd almost provided the key to unlock the Japanese defence in the 51st minute when he scampered down the left wing before sending in a delightful low cross that had too much pace for the oncoming Sarkies.
In the 66th minute Cristiano again went close, only this time he was unable to make the most of a handling error by Fujigaya and the Gamba defence were in attendance to clear.
But Gamba never looked seriously troubled and in the end Nishino’s team were deserving of the win and of their place at the FIFA World Club Cup, where they will participate as Asia’s representatives.

I'd just like to add my congratulations to Gamba Osaka. Worthy champions and the best team I saw last season. On reflection our (Chonburi) results against them look pretty good now. Especially as we were only a few seconds away from beating them at their place.
However, they completely outplayed us in BKK.

Iraq have been demoted to the AFC Cup, they have no teams in Champions League next year. Same goes for Kuwait and Syria. So... at least the Thai league is more organised than some!!! |

PEA Ayutthaya will play Singapore Armed Forces on 18th Feb. The winner will play the Indonesian champs PSMS Medan on 25th for a spot in the 2009 AFC Champions league. The venue for the first play off game will be decided on 18th Dec. Ayutthaya stadium will be closed for a couple of months next season for renovations. PEA will use the Thammasat stadium Rangsit (capacity 20 000) for their AFC matches in 2009. Hope you can all make it out to watch PEA represent the Thai league.... |

2009 ACL draw – thrilling match-ups  AFC Competitions Director Michelle Chai conducts the draw for the 2009 AFC Champions League at the Emirates Group HQ in Dubai on Wednesday .DUBAI: Battle lines have been drawn for the 2009 AFC Champions League after the official draw on Wednesday at the Emirates Group HQ in Dubai threw up some intriguing match-ups.
Defending champions Gamba Osaka, of Japan, have landed in Group F with Korea Republic’s FC Seoul, Shandong Luneng, of China, and Indonesian side Sri Wijaya.
Qatar’s Umm Salal were rewarded for their successful 2008 Qatari Cup campaign with a daunting draw.
Umm Salal were drawn alongside high-flying Emirati outfit Al Jazira, Iran’s Hazfi Cup winners Esteghal and Saudi’s two-time Asian champions Al Ittihad in Group C.
Coached by Frenchman Gerard Gili, Salal will begin their campaign with a tough trip to Abu Dhabi to face the Black Spiders, while Esteghal travel to Jeddah for a mouth-watering tie with Ittihad.
In the East draw for the 32-team group stage, Gamba, who secured their place in the lucrative $14million tournament by winning the Emperor’s Cup last week in Tokyo, will get their defence under way when they host FC Seoul at the Expo ’70 Stadium.
Kashima Antlers, the six-time J-League winners and champions in 2008, face China’s Shanghai Shenhua and K-League champions Suwon Bluewings in Group G.
Saudi Champions Cup victors Al Shabab meet Iranian league winners Persepolis, Qatari heavyweights Al Gharafa and the winners of the Western qualifying play-off, either the UAE’s Al Sharjah or India’s sole flag-flier Dempo, in Group B.
Al Hilal, the Saudi Arabian giants who have a long heritage in Asia’s elite tournament having won twice previously, were the first name out of the pot as they headed Group A.
They were grouped with the UAE’s President’s Cup winners Al Ahly, as well as Uzbekistan league runners-up Pakhtakor and Iran’s Saba Battery.
Emirati League champions Al Shabab, who have struggled this year in the newly formed UAE Football League, will travel to Iran as they start their campaign against Sepahan.
The other opening match in Group D will see Uzbek champions Bunyodkor play host to Saudi Arabia’s Al Ettifaq.
Back to the East, and Champions League debutants Nagoya Grampus will take heart from the draw after they found themselves placed in Group E alongside Beijing Guoan and Ulsan Hyundai, both of whom finished third in their respective leagues last season.

As opposed to tens of thousands who are currently packed in to Rajamangala you mean?! The PEA management have really messed this up (see the other thread) and I'm afraid that it reflects badly on Thai football. The AFC have already given FAT a rocket and I'm sure that they won't be too pleased with the events of the past few days. I really feel for the fans and players. You've been treated appallingly. |

back from the stadium a little while ago. We went to the game a little flat, but our spirits rose as the fans were defiantly showing a beleif in the event and in the club. I think they were trying to show the message 'we do care about this' as the AFC must be wondering.
For the most part the match was enjoyable, only the extra time was a downer.
Next up for PEA is Kor Royal Cup against Chonburi in Supachalasai stadium. On form I am worried.

A good show from your fans tonight. And fair play to you. However, I feel that the mistakes made by your management will take a long time to get over.
It's such a shame that the current champions of Thailand have behaved in this way, especially as the AFC have already given FAT an ultimatum.
It's probably created a lot of problems for Thai clubs in the future.

The pitch is a joke. Surprised that AFC have awarded Thailand a Youth Championship qualification round as hosts, but i guess the reason for that is more logistics than anything.
I guess with the AFC's ranking, we don't get any points for stadia, probably no points for airports after the recent closures and probably minus points for last weeks drubbing against SAFFC for playing standards.
Let's hope we can make up for it with strong performances in the AFC Cup and an all Thai final maybe??

PEA's management haven't done Thai football any favours. I expect the AFC won't be too happy.
As for the pitch..............there are a lot of surfaces worse than that in the TPL!
