George Burley. Or Maradona Steve Darby would be OK with the latter. "But the best two I have seen at close quarters in training and at games are Baresi at Milan, the player’s player, and Maradona who doesn’t play the same game as me!! Diego was a class apart and a hell of a nice bloke. I spent 2 weeks with the Argentina 1994 World Cup squad. Words cannot describe how good he was." From a recent www.clubwebsite.co.uk/chonburifc/ interview with Thailand's caretaker boss.

BANGKOK, Sept 10 (Reuters) - Thailand are in talks with former England captain Bryan Robson with a view to hiring him as their new national team coach, the country’s soccer chief said on Thursday. “We’re still in negotiation, but he is interested and we are interested,” Thai Football Association president Worawi Makudi told Reuters. “It’s still at the first stage, but we are keen to bring Robson to Thailand,” he added. If the deal goes ahead, Robson, 52, will replace fellow former England midfielder Peter Reid, whose contract was terminated by mutual consent earlier this week. Thailand rejected Reid’s proposal to remain national team coach while serving as assistant manager at Premier League Stoke City, with whom he has been training with over the past few weeks. Robson would be expected to continue Reid’s work in revamping the Thai game to steer the soccer-obsessed country to the 2014 World Cup finals. During 13 years at Manchester United, Robson won two league titles, four FA Cups and the European Cup Winners’ Cup. He was capped 90 times by England and played in three World Cups. http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=reu-thailandrobson&prov=reuters&type=lgns

Why the FAT not seriously is thinking about Darby? Just makes me shaking my head. At least I would give Steve the chance for the two QF vs Singapore and the SEA Games. To bring somebody in, who is not familiar with the country, the culture, the football and the players, in my oppinion is a bigger risk to loose those two important games, than to give Steve the chance. We are only 8 weeks ahead of those games, and I am not sure, but I don't think that Robson would have any chance to get familiar with the team. E.g. have some friendlies. What about, if THA is loosing those matches and is not able to qualifiy for the Asian Cup. Will they sack Robson than just after a few weeks in charge? :

If FAT is made up of people with sensibility and rationale, they would not be in the predigament they are in.
Thailand football does not need a high profile coach to impress anyone.
All we need is someone who can setup training program for a long term development. Only then, quality of National Team will improve.
Darby seems to fit that profile and could conceivably take the program to another level. Sadly, FAT enjoys flirting with the moon and live in a day to day football fantasy.

Spot on. He's already said as much. In the piece in the Bangkok Post, Worawi was quoted as saying he wanted Robson in order to raise the profile of the Thai league! : If FAT is made up of people with sensibility and rationale, they would not be in the predigament they are in.

Agree with all of this. Perfectly put. Why the FAT not seriously is thinking about Darby? Just makes me shaking my head. What about, if THA is loosing those matches and is not able to qualifiy for the Asian Cup. Will they sack Robson than just after a few weeks in charge? : I thought the same thing. I would definitely let Darby take charge for the Singapore games. Robson will have barely learnt the players' names by the time those matches are played.

Nobody raises the profil of a league only because of a headcoach wich only has a big name as player. And even not if he has big name as coach. You raise a profil thought to many other things. Wurawi, the FAT and the TPL, cannot overhaul in a few years, for what a country like Japan needed more than 10 years.

I think reasons why Woravi bring ENglish coach cos' English FA want him to vote for next world cup and also they offer Woravi for coach and Robson is a guy who available and work with English FA .. that is reason
it's a win-win situation for Woravi to have Robson and i believe that Darby still be Robsonb's assistance cos' he is well known in SEA, asia football and most important is players from Thai Leauge
Robson never proves himself any success record in coach job but i think maybe he is good to motivate our players and discipline (same as Peter Withe) with he able be a headline in asia football more easier than Darby..

Your points are very well taken but like I have stated in my previous post, players could be mesmerized by Robson's appearance that they forget to act upon the game plan. Seriously though, I believe that Darby is capable of leading Thailand to compete with other coaches the team facing in this tournament. Robson's on the other hand has never work with players of Thailand level before. They are not the type of players who used to the kind of game impact and game comprehension Robson is accustom to. I still think it's a wrong move, especially, at this very moment. Furthermore, can we really be certain that Darby won't take a serious consideration from other associations offers? I just hate to see someone like Darby who has what it takes to help Thailand move to the next levels departed due to FAT's poor dicision.

You could be right. More on the strange relationship between the English FA and the FAT in the Bangkok Post today: "Worawi may have to go for an English coach as the English FA reportedly shoulder the salary of the Thai national team coach".WTF?

BANGKOK, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Former England captain Bryan Robson has “agreed in principal” to become coach of Thailand’s national team and will visit the Kingdom next week to discuss terms, the country’s soccer chief said on Friday.
If the deal went through, the former Manchester United midfielder would be tasked with steering the team to the 2014 World Cup finals, Football Association of Thailand (FAT) president Worawi Makudi said.
“Robson is interested and has agreed in principal to become our coach,” Worawi told Reuters.
“He wants to come and discuss the details in person. He’s a big name and we think he could play a big part in improving Thai football.”
Robson, 52, would replace fellow former England international Peter Reid, who parted company with the Thais on Sept. 9 after less than a year in charge.

The truth is there are more Thais who are fans of ManU than Thailand NT. Yes, it is sad but it also is the truth. A lot of this has to do with FAT attutude and its performance in recent years. FAT propbably thinks it could gain market shares or at the least sharing it by bringing in ex-ManU star and team captain as the coach!

If reports are to be believed, Peter Reid wanted to do two jobs - Thai national team coach and assistant coach at Stoke - but was told that it was all or nothing by the Thais.
Now Bryan Robson wishes to have two roles and it doesn't appear to be a problem. I wonder why that is?

It's all a bad move in my opinion.
Thailand need a old hand to be put in charge, preferrably someone who knows football in the region, and someone who is quite happy to include the local coaches in his setup.
Steve Darby still stands out as the man.
How long will it be before Robson packs it in??
The best thing Robson can do, is listen to Darby and certainly let him take control of the team for at least the double headers against Singapore. Hell, let Darby run it behind the scenes and let Robson take the plaudits.
I just hope that FAT have a programme to work to, such as getting friendlies arranged now so that Robson can prepare thoroughly rather than go unprepared against Iran and Jordan next January.
In my eyes, if we don't get 6 points from Singapore, then Robson might aswell pack it in straight away because i can't see him around come 2014 world cup qualifiers - and that would be the next challenge.

He announced loudly and proudly, "As everybody knows, I'm the global ambassador for Manchester United" It reflects his stage of mind at the moment when it comes to football. It's only a human nature for a person to adhere to positive things in life considering life outside ManU had treathed him in recent years.
I hope he realizes that coaching a National Team and a Club Team are two different Worlds. In coaching a club team there are times when you just scale down you expectation in order to comeback strong in another match with a more meaningful to league's standing. Coaching a National team in a given tournament, however, things could crumble down in just a mere head flick of Le Cong Vihn or Nor Alam Shah.
There is one fact that I am sure many us are well aware of... People on this side of the pond are, generally, pretty low key except when it comes to National Team or National Flag. Unrealistic football expectation has routinely destroyed former national heros time and again.
Furthermore, National team players despite their abilities still are a group of young men with whom perfomances are often feeding off the 'perceived dedication' of the coach. I just hate to see a man with brilliant playing career having his coaching side further tarnished.

On a German Onlinesports newsmagazin, a guy commented that news as follows (free translation): "My first thought had been, nice country, a lot of english citizen life there, and if they money is fine, I would do the job. Even the level of football isn't that high there." ...maybe robson had the same in mind...
