The only condition being that Thailand play all their "home" games in Surrey Wink
I don't understand well your entry , where is Surrey   Huh?

Surrey is in the south of England. It's where he's living after running away from Thailand.

maybe thaksin is helping?
Worawi Makudi was hopeful Manchester City's billionaire owner Thaksin Shinawatra would help foot the bill.

Quote
"Thaksin loves football, he loves his country and he has offered to help us, with anything," he said.

In a way I hope he is helping. I would hate to think that this is 100% of FAT money that is being poured away in this irresponsible manner.

No,I don't think Reid going see some middle of the road matchup is a surprise if he chose to do so.
It would be a text book PR move should he followed up with, say, Sharks' game on his next trip in a very near future.

Anything he does from here on in will be under a microscope, one living condition I do not envy!  Cheesy

This was an e-mail I received from a friend in London, English.....

We used to sing a song about him on the football terraces...

" Reidys got a monkey's head!" over and over and over!

Well, we shall see.............   Wink

Peter Reid has finally put pen to paper and officially become Thailand coach. Some encouraging things in the article: he's talked to Peter Withe already, he's watched all of Thailand's WCQs, he's got Sripan as his right-hand man. Only grumble "he's thinking of learning basic Thai." Come on Reidy, you can do better than that. How would you feel if you signed a foreign player for an English club side and they virtually refused to speak English? All in all though, a good start.

Reid's English isn't that magnificent either, according to the Telegraph.co.uk.
Here is part of an article entitled 'Cameras sworn in to expose a rash of expletives' that appeared on its website on Septmetber 2nd.

"Remember Peter Reid in Premier Passions, the BBC series about Sunderland, in which the club's erstwhile manager seemed
incapable of speaking except in what is euphemistically called industrial language. Nouns, verbs even conjunctions were
all bluer than the shirt he used to don as a player at Everton. Such was the potty-talk, it seemed that every time
the Sunderland chairman needed to raise funds for a transfer, all he had to do was put a swear box in the manager's office.

Well earlier this week, a couple of rivals emerged to challenge Reid as the undisputed master of swearing on television.
Let's hope the BBC programme's director will have time to add a new section to his history, dealing with the verbal response
of Australian cricketers to contentious dismissals."

Hmmm... it will be interesting to see how the Thai players react to possibly Reid's heated comment or rash of explative instruction.

I was at the press conference and that is a pretty accurate description of what was said. I think everyone came away feeling positive. I spoke with a couple of journos and they are desperate for him to do well.

He also seemed very relaxed and was happy to spend time chatting even after the q&a session had finished.

He was at our match today so will have plenty to think about over the weekend Smiley

Agree with previous posters who said that Peter Reid came over well at his press conference. There was a lot of interesting stuff in the 30-minute Q and A session. If you want to listen to the full session, click the below (be warned the audio will load slowly unless you have a speedy internet connection).

He's been true to his word and has been to a lot of matches already. And not just in the Premier League. He's also been watching DVDs of teams that he hasn't been able to watch "in the flesh".

I missed Top Corner last night -working late Sad - but I think the pictures they used were from BKK Uni v Chonburi on September 20th. The first division match referred to would have been Meung Thong Nong Jok United v Royal Thai Airforce on the 21st.

I know that he's keen to get out into the provinces and see as many players as he can.

They have done it before Vinnie, i did some research and noticed that in 2005 we played just 2 games!

Last year we finished playing in July and didn't make a come back until October - it's almost like FAT think its close season during July-September

SRS suggested before that the people on this board should run Thai football. I know that the suggestion was 'tongue in cheek' but with each revelation I start to think that it's a pretty good idea. They (FAT) just seem to get the most basic and fundamental aspects of football wrong.

Why do you want to talk to Mr Reid, he's not going to pick you for the national team!!!

Reid should spend time talking to Winothai, Suksomkit et al rather than yourself.

What I have read thus far indicates Reid is quite a media savy individual but the latest article from The Sun that being float around Thai Language webbords isn't on of them.

According to the artcle, Reid sited his FAT's contractin clause that allowed him to talk to any club interested in him at anypoint and time. What an ethical clause!
FAT head clause should have atleast prohibit him from talking during the time in which the Thailand National team is in the middle of important tournament.

Then again, this is Football Association of Thailand I am writing about. They don't call themselves FAT for nothing.

Although the clause Peter Reid has in his contract is pretty standard, I agree wholeheartedly that he should be concentrating on the job at hand not discussing a possible move back to England. He whipped up interest in the story with a virtual 'come and get me' invitation in his ghost-written Daily Mail column. As a result, most of the media attention in Phuket has been on him rather than Thailand and the AFF Suzuki Cup. If he is getting paid even half of what has been reported, he does not need to write columns in the British newspapers. That should have been the first thing to go when he signed on the dotted line.

He's staying :

Update: Reid to stay in Thailand

Peter Reid has denied reports he is seeking an offer to manage his old club Sunderland, and fully intends to continue coaching the Thai national team to the World Cup in 2014.

Reid said he was "enjoying tremendously" his new job with Thailand, his first job as a national team coach.

He had seemed to indicated earlier on Monday that he was interested in replacing Roy Keane at Sunderland, where he managed for seven years.

Being manager at Sunderland "is a great job for any manager and of course I want to go back to England at some point, but right now, I've got a new challenge on my hands," Reid said.

He spoke to reporters after his Thai charges defeated Laos 6-0 on Monday night.

Reid, who previously managed Mis tasked with the tough job of steering the country to its first World Cup in 2014.

Sunderland are without a manager after former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane quit last week after the Black Cats hit the relegation zone after five defeats in six matches. (with Agency reports)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Earlier report:

LONDON (AFP) - Peter Reid has confirmed that he would quit his post as Thailand boss if he was offered the chance to return to Sunderland as manager following the departure of Roy Keane.

Reid, who was in charge of the English Premier League club between 1995 and 2002, took over the Thai national team in September on a four-year contract.

Reid took over the Thai national team in September on a four-year contract

But he revealed that a clause in his contract allows him to leave if he receives an offer from an English club.

Reid told the Daily Mail he would be interested in talking to Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn about the vacancy created by Keane's decision to quit after a run of five defeats in six matches left Sunderland in the relegation zone.

"It's fantastic in Thailand and the experience has already improved me but everyone aspires to work in England," Reid was quoted as saying.

"It's the place to be. The players here dream about it and I know I won't be working abroad forever.

"There is a clause in my contract which allows me to speak to English clubs if they show interest, so that would be up to Niall Quinn."

Despite his willingness to throw his hat into the ring, Reid is not regarded as one of the leading candidates to take over at the Stadium of Light.

Sam Allardyce and Alan Curbishley both have stronger managerial track records than Reid and are available immediately having left Newcastle and West Ham respectively earlier this season.

There has also been speculation that Sunderland could approach either Gordon Strachan, the Celtic manager, or Martin Jol, the former Tottenham boss who is currently enjoying a successful spell in charge of German side Hamburg.

Quinn said at the weekend that Sunderland would not be rushed into a hasty appointment of a successor to Keane but he is due to report to the club's board on Wednesday on the progress he has made towards establishing a short-list of candidates.

The club have reportedly received more than 50 applications for the vacancy.

Quite a strange saga and I'm not sure what to make of it. All I willl say is that I would be surprised if PR was at the top of the Sunderland board's wishlist. No surprise that he's staying.

There is a rumour in the English press linking Peter Reid with Southampton. I hasten add it was in the 'Daily Star' newspaper, not exactly known for its quality journalism!

REID LINED UP AT SAINTS

Peter Reid will be the new Southampton manager if a rival consortium to Matt Le Tissier’s Pinnacle group take over the club.

With Saints legend Le Tissier’s consortium stalling on completing their takeover, a Middle East businessman has held takeover talks.

Fronted by businessmen Marc Jackson and Stuart Green, the group have tabled a £13m bid which, if successful, will see former Sunderland boss Reid quit as Thailand boss.

Saints’ players and staff at the club have been told they will not be paid today.

Jackson said: “We have met with the administrator.

“It is a real shame the staff are not going to be paid but that confirms in my mind we are going to go forward with our bid.”

Just wondering what people's general thought are on him? I like British managers going abroad (blogged about it the other day) and it would be nice to know he is doing well.

Understand the final defeat to Vietnam was a bit of a shock, so what are the aims now? And do you think he will be sticking around?

Cheers,

Dan

P.S comments on the blog in my sig will be appreciated! Ta.

It's all been very positive so far, Dan. His approach and training methods seem to have gone down well with the players and I've certainly seen an improvement in the lads from my club (Chonburi FC) who have been involved with the national team.

He's been true to his word and got out and about to watch as many games as possible and hasn't been afraid to call up new players and shake things up a bit. He seems to have the support of the FAT and, probably because of his status in the game, the respect of the club coaches.

I was here when Peter Withe was coach and there are a lot of similarities. It's no coincedence that Thailand enjoyed their best ever period when Withe was here and I expect PR to enjoy similar success. Maybe even do better.

He's got a good backroom team around him; employing Steve Darby was a shrewd move because he's got a lot of experience in this part of the world. And they both seem to be sensitive to the Thai character and culture as well, which is hugely important.

I'm pretty confident that he'll stick around. He's not had that many serious competitive matches yet but I'm sure that he's itching to get stuck in.

Hope that helps.

Forgot to mention that the aim would appear to be World Cup qualification. I'm not sure how realistic this is just yet. Peter Withe got us to the qualifying rounds - which is the furthest we've ever been - and I think that is probably as much as we can expect again in the immediate future. However, it would be nice to climb the FIFA rankings and become an Asian "A" list team.

NO. 2 IS FINE WITH ME: DARBY
Quote

When Peter Reid was unveiled as Thailand's national team coach last year, he admitted that he did not know much about Asian football in general or Thai football in particular.

To become successful in Thailand, the English coach knew that he needed a right-hand man with knowledge of football - and other things - in the region.

In came his compatriot, Steve Darby who was hand-picked by the former England midfielder. Both hail from Liverpool.

Darby has vast experience as a coach and instructor in Bahrain, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand.

Furthermore, he has a Vietnamese wife who is a former Miss Hanoi, and is a part-time commentator for ESPN Star Sport.

"Peter called me when I was in Vietnam and I accepted the role as his assistant," said Darby.

They have since formed a relatively successful partnership with Thailand, who held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw in a recent friendly in Bangkok.

"I gave him local knowledge, not only about football but other stuff like culture," said Darby.

"I told him what he should and should not do here. You can do one things in England but you can't do it here such as touching one's head. It's not about which is right or wrong. It's about different culture."

Reid began his reign as Thailand's coach without an assistant. In the initial stages, he travelled a lot to watch local matches in the capital and other provinces.

As Reid did not have information about overseas-based Thai stars, most players in his squad were those who played in the local league.

When Darby arrived, he told Reid about Thai players who are playing abroad like Sutee Suksomkit who is with Tampiness Rovers in Singapore and Datsakorn Thonglao of Vietnam's Hoang Anh Gia Lai.

"Nobody told him about this and Thailand become stronger with their presence," Darby said.

Darby wrote a handbook for local players and coaches, part of which has been translated into Thai. In fact, he has written several books and articles.

In the early stages of their partnership, Reid and Darby agreed that Thai players had technique but lacked physical strength so Darby helped introduced a workout programme which is now part of their training.

"They train in the gym and many now have six packs and can cope with big players," added Darby.

Darby also wants the players to have a ˜quality rest"™ after a rigorous training session.

"We train only 90 minutes a day but Peter's training programme is high tempo so the players need a quality rest," he said.

The players are advised to swim and avoid junk food while carbonated and alcoholic drinks are banned in the training camp.

"There aren't any fizzy drinks in the camp and we have only water and milk," he said.

Dried salty beef is popular among Thai players as it can go well with both rice and alcoholic drinks.

But it is banned in the training camp as it could make the players dehydrate fast.

However, the management are not the police and there are no "stupid rules" in the training camp, Darby says.

"We act like men and the players act like men," he said.

"I know that Thais like whiskey and if the players want some outside the training camp, they can have it.

"We do not have any disciplinary problems. Nobody misses training for stupid reasons."

He says the players have become more professional and want to train. For example, Surat Sukha joined the training camp when his wife was about to deliver their child so he was asked to go home to look after her.

"You give them respect and they give you their heart," he said.

Darby has high praise for Thai players particularly Sutee and Surachai Jaturapattarapong who played for Singapore's Home United when Darby was the coach.

"They are never late for training. They are true professionals, leaders on the pitch who can die for you," Darby said.

As for young stars, Darby sees a bright future for striker Teerasil Dangda - he normally calls him by his nickname "Mui" - who was once on Manchester City's books.

Teerasil is probably the hottest Thai striker at the moment. He started the Liverpool match alongside Teerathep Winothai.

Darby also likes SEA Games side goalkeeper Kavin Thammasajjanan who is big and agile and could be Thailand's number one in the future.

Another star to watch, in Darby's eyes, is Thai-Swiss Peter Laeng who made his Thailand debut in a warm-up against Pakistan last month and was used as a substitute in the Liverpool game.

Laeng, whose mother is Thai, is playing for FC Schaffhausen in Switzerland's second division.

He has played for that country at every level from U-15 to U-21 before switching to Thailand.

Darby says Laeng, 23, is the first player to get a call-up to the national team in his search for foreign players with Thai blood, and many may follow in his footsteps.

"I have a lot of friends around the world in football or are journalists," he said.

"So I sent them emails asking them to look for players with a Thai connection."

There are several players with this connection in Australia, Britain, Finland and Norway who may be good enough to play for Thailand, Darby says.

"There is one in Australia who was born just inside the Thai border with Laos. He has a Lao passport," he said.

Darby is happy to work with young players. He coached the likes of Mark Viduka, Harry Kewell, Lucas Neill, Marc Bosnich and Brett Emerton while they were young.

"After being the boss at several clubs, I am happy with the role in Thailand. Peter is the boss here and he is taking all the sh**," joked Darby.

When there is a coaching job available in England, Reid's name is often mentioned as a possible candidate.

The former Manchester City, Sunderland, Leeds and Coventry manager has said that he wants to return to England but only after his four-year contract with Thailand expires.

However, anything can happen in football. Reid may quit Thailand and take a coaching job in his home country. If that happens, Darby is ready to take over the Thailand's coach job if offered.

He says one has to be ambitious but that he always sees out his contract.

"Unless Manchester United or Liverpool call me!" he joked .

I'm sure that he (Steve Darby) would take the Oldham job if he was offered it. ; )

Yet another rumour about Peter Reid moving back to England. The latest one seems to have a bit more substance then the others (ie, quotes, rather then just conjecture). I guess we'll have to wait and see if anything transpires.

Peter Reid set to become new Stoke assistant manager

Reid was introduced to the players over dinner yesterday and sat in the directors' box to watch today's stalemate at St Andrews. Afterwards manager Tony Pulis disclosed: "I've spoken to Peter and he's come along today. Fingers crossed, if we can get things sorted out he will join us. "He's a football character, he's bubbly and he's a good man. You need those sort of people around you". "The fact he's as ugly as me will take a bit of pressure off me as well" he quipped.

Stoke prepare to offer former Sunderland boss Peter Reid a job

Peter Reid is being lined up to become assistant manager of Stoke.

The former Manchester City and Sunderland boss was at yesterday's goalless draw with Birmingham at St Andrews and Stoke manager Tony Pulis said: 'He always sees the bright side and I need someone around like that.'

Reid is coach of Thailand and would be reluctant to leave the Far East where he has become a real favourite.

However, he has expressed a desire to return to English football if the right offer came along and he regards the Stoke approach as a good opportunity for him to make his mark again.
