The classification of the best leagues of the world is made objectively without any outside influence of any sort. We follow the criteria that the level of performance of a league is reflected by the best classified teams of that league who in turn usually represent their country in international club competitions. If one looks at the football power-houses of the world, one notices that regularly 4 or 5 clubs of their leagues are always competing in continental competitions. By adding the points won in all competitions by the five best placed clubs of each league, we have the points for the country which in turn helps to establish a fair classification I don't give that list any credence at all. It's total nonsense. So you gain points for winning a competition, but surely the value of the competion needs to be rated. It's much harder to win the European Champions League for example, then it is to win the African Champions League or the Copa Libratedores. The A-League in 98th place?? The Brazilian League in 2nd place?? Dont make me laugh...It's a league for kids and players who are ending their careers! Are the Hong Kong and Indonesian Leagues really that much better then the Thai League?? I honestly don't believe this sort of thing is quantifiable, as there are too many variables to take into consideration.

From that website : The classification of the best leagues of the world is made objectively without any outside influence of any sort. By adding the points won in all competitions by the five best placed clubs of each league, we have the points for the country which in turn helps to establish a fair classification. It is important to note that only the yearly classification is representative, since all competitions move along the whole season and over twelve months, we have an objective view of the best. This system has been used since 1991, and it is recognized today as the most precise in rating the leagues of the world. All letters and cards of appreciation for raising the TPL up to these dizzy heights (only a few places behind Scotland) should be addressed to: Chonburi FC Srinthorn Stadium Assumption College SriRacha Chonburi THAILAND

This backs up my point! How can one team be representative of the whole league? If you win the AFC Cup this year I expect to see the Thai League in the top 20 of next years list .

I'm sure in those rankings, the Lincolnshire Senior Shield is worth as many points as the Champions League . Excuse my ignorance, (my limited non-league knowledge only goes as far as Blue Square North) what League are Stamford in?

Unibond Divison 1 south (step 4 - two levels below Blue Square North) for the time being. Owing to our central location we've played in north, south, east and west divisions! We've shared divisions with teams from Devon and teams from Cumbria over the years!

I've got a mate who is a big Worksop Town fan, and I think they have been shunted round the leagues a little bit, due to their location. The nearest non-league sides to me are probably Cammell Lairds and Vauxhall Motors....and Chester City now they been relegated! Have Stamford ever been in the same league as Lairds or Vauxhall?

I can't beleive Hong Kong is ahead of Thailand!!! We are a lot better than them, teams like Happy Valley can easily get trashed by Chonburi when they are one of Hong Kong's best clubs.

No, but they were in the same division as Marine and Prescot Cables in the 07-08 season. I've been to Marine a few times, they always used to be up near the top of the Unibond Premier (as it was then). They seem to have fallen away after Roly Howard (who managed the club for 33 years ) retired. I just had a quick look at stamfordafc.net, and it seems you will be in the same league as Cammell Laird next season! The name of your manager (Tuncay Korkmaz) rings a bell , his name is obviously more memorable then his playing ability, as I've no idea who he played for!?

I'm pretty sure he was mentioned on the Danny Baker & Danny Kelly football show on BBC Radio 5. Someone uploaded 30 hours of the old shows, and i've got them on my i-pod. It's great to listen to. They used to get people to send in footballers names that sounded funny. Both Baker & Kelly found the name Tuncay Korkmaz hilarious for some reason....It's nowhere near as funny as Gerry Slagboom, Bongo Christ, Segar Bastard, Ars Bandeet, Semkeyno Jam-Jam and Eggbert Barwinkle

The forum on the internet treehouse doesn't work anymore, but I've found this link, which should help you download them. http://www.twohundredpercent.net/?page_id=1380It was the best football show on the radio by miles! They'd never get away with saying some of that stuff these days. Even though the shows are 10 years old, it's still fantastic to listen to. Danny Kelly now works for Talksport and he's on from 7pm-10pm Mon-Fri, and Danny Baker was doing 5 live 606 on Tuesday evenings. As of Septmeber he will be on Saturday mornings from 9am-11am (on BBC Radio 5). I'm sure you'll be able to get it on the 'BBC Listen again' service.

Thanks, mate. I'll check it out. I caught all the recent episodes on the BBC. Fraser Digby's Washbag is right up there with some of the classic DB moments. : )
Somewhere in my mum's loft I have a pile of Sniffin' Glue punk fanzines that Danny Baker was partly responsible for in '76 and '77. Probably worth a fortune now!

The new shows are a pale comparison of the ones that B&K did in the 90's, but they are still much better then the usual drivel on Five Live. The Fraser Digby washbag thing was very good

Baker and Kelly shows of the nineties were legendary. 606, Alan Green et al are absolutely mind numbing by comparison. They once did a feature on homemade memorabillia; rosettes, tin foil covered FA Cup cut outs and the like. A Dundee United fan phoned in and said that he once made a giant plywood bowtie , painted orange and black of course. As there was no way of adhering it to the top of his shirt, he had to just hold it up to his neck using a stick whch he had glued on the back. There was also a long-running feature with a young lady who was sleeping around with Premiership players.

I like the Dundee United fans turn of phrase, "I used to march to the ground with a two foot plywood bowtie on a pole, like a roman centurion going into battle". The young lady in question was bawdy Joanne. I read on a website that the 6 beau's were Simon Grayson, Steve Walsh, Robbie Savage, Brian Little, Duncan Ferguson & David Unsworth. I also read on Bakers website that she moved to Australia and married one of the top Aussie rules football players.

At the risk of turning this into the 'nostalgics anonymous' thread , does anyone remember the cult classic TV show hosted by Danny Kelly in the mid to late 90's on Channel 4, called 'Under The Moon'? It was on every Wednesday night from 12pm-3am. The audience demographic consisted mostly of insomniacs, students, the unemployed and probably a few alcoholics/junkies...but it was a fantastic show! The format was very simple, have 2 or 3 sports personalities as guests, get them drunk, get some members of the public (also drunk) to phone the studio, and then have a very lively and funny debate about current sporting issues, in which Danny Kelly would act as presenter/devils advocate/referee. They also had Tom Binns and Lisa Rogers doing various comical interludes. I found this article about the show, it's a very good read for anyone who was a fan . link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/apr/06/sportfeatures.television

I always thought that the Joanne calls were really tacky. Yeah, it started off as being quite interesting but it became a bit tiresome, especially after she revealed that she fancied DB. He became even more sychophantic towards her after that .

Strange that with all the moving and merging of threads, the moderator has decided to leave this one alone! I wouldn't be offended if the mod moves this thread to 'General Discussion'. Perhaps retitled 'SRS, Marco and Vinnie waffle among themselves'!
I remember Under the Moon. And do you remember 'Standing Room Only'? Slightly irreverent football magazine show on BBC2 presented by Shelley Webb and Simon someone.

SRS, Marco and Vinnie waffle among themselves. I like it : ) I think he was called Simon O'Brien and played Damon in Brookside. I only vaguely remember the show. There seemed to be a rash of yoof/football programmes in the wake of the 1990 World Cup.

It's not the penalties that I think of when I think of Italia 90. It's more the nature of the German goal and the fact that we were in the semis of the World Cup finals and had a team that actually seemed good enough to win the tournament. That's why there's been nothing to touch it in terms of emotion since.
It remains the only time that I've cried because of a football result. I was only nine!

That's why there's been nothing to touch it in terms of emotion since.
It remains the only time that I've cried because of a football result. I was only nine!
I know what you mean. I also cried at the WC Final 1986, I was twelf. ...the second time was 1999, 26th of May.....no I couldn't cry I was shocked too much...the secon time I cried 2001. But that time it was tears of joy after the CL Final.

I do vaguely remember 'standing room only'. Vinnie is correct in saying Simon O'Brien is an Evertonian. He had a show on BBC Radio Merseyside for a while but he got sacked for saying 'F*** the government, f*** them all" while the show was live on air : .

1970 for me. We were on holiday in Scotland, of all places, and I'll never forget the reaction of our guest house landlady when we lost to West Germany, 3-2. I don't remember crying but I felt terrible for days.

There's a copy of Sniffin Glue on ebay with a Buy It Now price of $150 (item number 150360149571) Better get in your mum's loft, SRS! Seriously?! Bloody hell!!! I'm rich!!!! JC, I've kept all my old Punk vinyl. It's safely stored away with all my other seemingly priceless articles in my mum's loft.

Why are the 25th team at the bottom of Premier League? Don't worry Nat, we always start slowly. Last season we had 9 points after 9 games and we finished 5th. We have recently signed Dinijar Bilyaletdinov from Lokomitiv Moscow, and Sylvain Distin from Portsmouth. Moyes has promised more signings very soon. Don't forget we still have our 3 best players to come back into the team after injury...Jagielka, Arteta and Yakubu (the Yak played for 15 minutes tonight against Sigma Olomouc). Not much is said about the fact we are missing 3 key players. Imagine if Liverpool didn't have Gerrard,Torres & Carragher, or Chelsea didn't have Lampard, Terry & Drogba for 8 months.....We'd never hear the end of it .

To continue the Baker and Kelly theme prevalent throughout most of this page, I can resurrect one of their topics 'players you've seen in their kit when they're not playing': Korat striker Prasitchai in last year's third shirt on an escalator in Big C!!
