From todays BKK Post. This was also reported in the Chonburi programme on Sunday. Good news : )

FA Cup back on agenda
By: TOR CHITTINAND

After years of absence, Thailand's FA Cup will make a return starting from June 27. The final of the knock-out tournament will be held at Supachalasai stadium on Oct 27, said Ong-art Kosinkha, secretary-general of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT).

All local sides including those in the Provincial League and Division One, Two, Three and Four are encouraged to take part in the event.

Teams from outside the Thai Premier League and Division One will have to play the first round and Division One sides will join them in the second round.

Teams from the top flight will begin their campaign in the third round in a format similar to that of the English FA Cup.

Interested sides have to apply to take part in the tournament from June 13-20 at the FAT headquarters and the draw for the first round will be made on June 23.

The champions will receive one million baht in prize money and the runners-up get 500,000 baht.

And here are the dates. Taken from www.thaileaguefootball.com :

1st Round - Division 2 teams play on 27th, 28th June and 4th and 5th of July at Chula Stadium and Nong Jork Stadium.

2nd round - 16 teams will qualify from division 2 to play 16 division 1 teams. - 11th, 12th,18th, 19th July - Home ground

3rd round - 16 teams from round 2 qualify to play 16 premier league teams. - 19th July, 5th, 19th, 26th August - Home Ground

4th round - 16 teams - 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd September - Home Ground

5th round - 8 teams - 30th September - Home Ground

6th round - Semi Finals - 14th October - Home Ground

7th round - Thai FA Cup Final - 21st October - National Stadium, Bangkok

As well as the earlier rounds being played during the week, which is bad enough, they are planning to play the semi-finals and final on a WEDNESDAY?!!!! This means that if certain clubs, Tero etc, reach the semi final and are drawn at home the match will be played midweek at 4:00pm!!

And what about those of us who work for a living? It won't be easy getting to these games.

Sometimes FAT just leave me speechless. Where is the sense in that? Clueless!!!

Hopefully, as many clubs as possible will enter - but with it not being mandatory, it will be interesting to see if the Regional League clubs that have been struggling will bother to enter or not.

Hope Phuket will enter after there statements at the beginning of the year - it's now time for them to proove that they are prepared to go back and forth to Bangkok - even in times of struggle, like they are now.

Possible other entries from the Regional League South would be Nakhon Sri Thammarat, Narathiwat and Satun. I can't see the rest taking up the challenge after poor starts to the season. Neither side's that I haven't mentioned from that Division may struggle to get a win and could end up on some bad scorelines making it a dull long journey back home.

Next step is to make this a mandatory tournament or even a floodlit cup for teams with suitable grounds to play the games at times that  the fans can enjoy the football. It's no use having a game to empty stadiums.

I agree, dru. Or maybe in the first stage, they should have invited only the two top leagues, until the new regioanl league teams are able to participat.

Typical FAT. Come up with a good idea - as with the Regional League - then go about ruining that perfectly good idea - as with the Regional League.

From todays BKK Post.

FA Cup is back after long absence
By: TOR CHITTINAND

The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) is reviving the FA Cup which will make a return this month after an eight year absence.

Thailand's FA Cup tournament was launched in 1989 and the most successful side were the now-defunct Bangkok Bank who won the knock-out competition four times.

Kasikorn Bank, who like Bangkok Bank have ceased to exist, won the cup in 2001 before the event was stopped.

I'm not sure whether the absence was a result of a lack of financial support or FAT's reluctance to organise it.

The FAT probably decided to revive the FA Cup because of the increase in the popularity of the Thai Premier League this season.

The FA Cup will be re-launched on June 27 when 32 teams from outside the top flight and first division meet in the first round.

The 16 Thai Premier League teams will begin their campaign in the third round and the final will be played at Rajamangala National Stadium on Oct 21.

The champions will receive one million baht in prize money and the runners-up 500,000 baht.

The winners will play in next season's AFC Cup and meet the Thai League champions for the King's trophy before the start of the new season.

The one million baht first prize is not too bad by Thai standards. The major sponsor of the FA Cup is Thaicom Foundation so the tournament's full name is the Thaicom Foundation FA Cup 2009.

The tournament also receives the backing of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) and Siam Sports Syndicate.

Many critics say the revival of the FA Cup was politically motivated as Thaicom Foundation is owned by fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The foundation is being run by his sister Yingluck Shinawatra, who serves as secretary and director of the organisation.

The critics' remarks might be true. After all, sports do mix with politics.

FAT president Worawi Makudi is believed to be close to Thaksin.

He was a member of the disbanded Thai Rak Thai Party which was led by Thaksin.

Like him or not, Thaksin probably has helped sports more than any other Thai premier.

Even after his government was toppled in a coup in 2006, he has not ceased to give support to sports.

Thaksin allowed the Thai national side to train at Manchester City when he owned the English club. He was also president of the Professional Golf Association of Thailand.

Several members of the coalition-leading Democrat Party are football fans and still play the sport occasionally particularly Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva who is a devout fan of Newcastle United.

Do we know how many teams have actually entered?

I wonder who will be presenting the trophy?

Unless I'm getting my dates mixed up, won't they have to postpone some league games for the first round matches?

If they are still planning to play the opening fixtures in BKK will you be able to get down, Vinnie? I'd certainly be up for it.

Our next scheduled league match is Udon away on July 5th. So that game may have to be moved if we play in the first round that weekend. However, there are first round matches scheduled for the weekend before that which won't clash with our fixture list.

The second round will be played over two weekends 11th/12th and 17th/18th. So our home league game with Buriram on the 11th will have to be moved IF we get to the second round and if our cup match is scheduled for that weekend. Clear!?

Either way, I won't come to BKK for the first round of the FA Cup but I am still intending to come for Chonburi's AFC Cup match.

the draw for the first round was made today. I'm not 100% sure but I think that the format has changed. 40 teams are playing in the first round, about half of them are div 2 teams. Most of the teams have been put into groups of three, one of the teams is the host venue.
Not confirmed yet, but I think so.

I'm deeply confused. The matches being played at the weekend are in the qualifying round in order to get into the first round proper. So why do fourteen teams get a bye in to the first round proper?
Korat, Samut Prakarn and Rajpracha (all currently top of their divisions) amongst others have to play in this qualifyng round whilst teams such as 'Pattaya School 8' go straight into the first round proper?!
This isn't rhetorical. Does anyone know why 14 teams don't have to play in the qualifying round?

I've been wondering that myself. My guess is that they had an odd number of teams enter so had to have an extra qualifying round in order to even things out. They will have made an un-seeded draw that saw 14 clubs get a bye into the first round proper.

It does seem strange that, as you say, some of the more established sides have to pre-qualify while local pub teams go straight through.

Strange timings and locations for the games. I wouldn't fancy playing, or watching, in the middle of the day.

And, if they're keeping to the original dates for the second round proper then it means that they will be playing three rounds over three consecutive weekends.
Only the FAT could make such a tangle out of such a simple idea as a randomly-drawn cup competition.

Yeah seedings would have helped.

Didn't Phuket openly admit in pre-season that they were actively looking for a TPL club to takeover? If that's still their attitude I hope they disappear completely.

This article doesn't give numbers but it seems that Phuket's pre-season boasts of having the budget and fanclub to match Chonburi were well wide of the mark...

http://www.phuketgazette.net/archives/articles/2009/article7379.html

"In fact the Phuket supporters were clearly out-cheered and possibly even outnumbered by many Pattani natives..."

"...sparse attendance..."

The above quotations brought a little mean-spirited smile to my face. But some of these new clubs (Ubon included) should realise that Rome wasn't built in a day. Chonburi, Muang Thong etc earned their places in the TPL. Still, it's good to see another farang interested in Thai football. I've already emailed him at the address given in the article.

The FA Cup final clashes with the AFC Cup semi-final second leg. Could be a problem if Chonburi are still involved in both competitions.

Doesn't look as if FAT have really thought this through.

It is the first FA Cup for years now, let's hope the FAT learn from the mistake of that one, and make some correction next year. And of course, hopefully there will be one next year.

Brief highlights from our match here
http://www.cheerballthai.com/board/viewthread.php?tid=1071
Check out the straight right delivered to our goalkeeper Yongyuth Judto after 31 seconds of the footage. Yongyuth was dazed and had a large, bloody gash just to the right of his right eye after this assault. The offender got a red card but surely he deserves much more than that. It was shown on NBT and Yongyuth's battered face was on the front cover of Siam Geela newspaper yesterday, so one would hope that the incident will have come to the FAT's attention and that they will take appropriate action. Fu*king shocking.

Why don't they move the final to a Saturday after the regular season has finished? That way they would attract a bigger crowd.

Invite all the supporters clubs to come along and make it a real celebration of Thai football. You'd be close to a sell out then and you'd have an occasion befitting the event.

Korat 4 Tak 1

An emphatic win for a very impressive Korat side. This was my first chance to see the Swat Cats this season and I certainly liked what I saw. Crisp passing, lots of movement off the ball, all players looking comfortable in possession and lots of variation. Just the way I think football should be played.

Both teams started brightly in the searing heat but it was Korat who looked the more dangerous from the off. Attacking mainly through the centre they were causing havoc in the Tak defence and it was only thanks to a post and some desperate defending that the scoreline remained blank.

The second half saw the introduction of leading scorer, Promphong, for Korat. I've heard great reports about this lad so I was looking forward to seeing him play. He looks an unlikely hero but I wasn't to be disappointed.

With the impressive Artorn marauding down the right wing, and the bulky Njoya down the left, the corner count started to grow. So too did the number of efforts on goal. Therefore it came as no surprise when, guess who, scored the opener. It was a scrappy finish - the ball was hit straight at the keeper, who fumbled it over the line - but the fifty or so visiting Korat fans didn't care as they launched into joyous celebrations on the touchline.

Once the breakthrough came there was only ever going to be one winner. The northeasterners poured forward with menace and Promphong soon added to his impressive tally with a sweet shot from just outside the box which looped into the top corner.

Tak were really struggling now and the players heads visibly dropped. With about ten minutes remaining, Promphong turned provider with a lovely little through ball which gave his strike partner the easy job of slotting the ball home. 3-0, job done.

However, there was to be a slight sting in the tail. A hopeful long punt up field was chased by a Tak striker. Out came Korat's stand in keeper and made a real mess of a simple catch, bundling the onrushing forward to the ground in the process. The ref had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. 3-1.

Sensing an unlikely comeback the yellow shirts attacked in numbers and were unlucky to see a right wing shot just graze the bar. From the resultant goal kick, Promphong received the ball outside the opponents penalty area. He side stepped first a defender and then the keeper before rolling the ball home to make it 4-1. A cool finish from a natural goalscorer.

I really enjoyed my first taste of FA Cup action. There was an obvious gulf in class between the two teams but all the players deserve enormous credit for providing such an entertaining game in such oppressive heat. It was bad enough standing watching!

Ref Watch - Had little to do in the way of making big decisions but handled the game very well.

Strecher Count - I can't remember a single stretcher being used. Although the trainers came on a couple of times.

Worth noting that our starting XI contained just one first team regular.

Thanks for the report. With your permission I'd like to use it on the website. Is that all written from memory?

Thanks. It's a part of our history. And surely the only case of a football team being named after a boy band. : )

You just beat me to it! A good test for us. It should give us a good idea of our current level. Army are of course second in Div 1 at the moment. I won't be attending though. 17:00 kick-off for a mid-week game is still far too early in my opinion. With our facilities there's no reason why the game can't start at 19:00 or later.
