Just to clarify: are you asking about the Thai league or the Thai language?

This would require a rather long reply. But here's a concise one ; )

I have been watching football in Thailand since 1997 (my first match was Thailand 1 South Korea 3 in March '97) and the opinions I formed then are still largely true today.

Thai players are very skillful but lack a bit of nous. They are still prone to silly outbursts (see the recent King's Cup) and seem to struggle when things are going against them.

They also seem reluctant to shoot and when they do it leaves a lot to be desired. Not many goals around in the TPL.

Peter Reid has gone on record about their fitness levels and I agree. However, we have to remember that a lot of these players are probably only Conference (English 5th Division) level and are as good as, and as fit as, the players who play in that division.

The vast majority of Thai players I have seen over the years do seem to really enjoy playing the game and always give their best. And. as a fan, you can't really ask for anything more.

I love watching Thai football and I love that even the top players are approachable and friendly - I can't imagine any of the current England team arriving for training on the back of a motorbike taxi and then spending the best part of thirty minutes chatting to a group of school kids!

I think that the day when we produce an exceptional talent is not that far away.

Hope that goes some way to answering your question. : )

There may not be many fans, charade, but the numbers are certainly going up. It's been a very positive start to the season in that respect throughout the leagues. Let's hope the powers that be mange it properly.

Crowds are way up. Still a long way behind Indonesia and some other leagues in the region but look at Muang Thong, Samut Songkram, PEA, Chonburi, Pattaya etc. All relatively well supported. There was even 4,000 who turned up to watch Phuket - a team that didn't exist a few months ago. And there's stadium development in the pipeline at Pattaya, Chonburi, Muang Thong and PEA. Things are definitely going in the right direction off the pitch.

As for on the pitch: I have to agree with SRS. The mass confrontation seems to be part and parcel of almost every match and we've talked about shooting a thousand times before. Even in these first couple of weeks of the season there has been some woeful finishing. They always seem to lash at the ball when a bit of composure would do. You'll see misses in the Thai league every weekend that you can barely believe.
But lets not moan too much. On the plus side, as SRS said, one always gets the feeling that the players are always trying to do their best and giving their all. Certainly not the feeling one gets when watching European football. And the friendliness and courtesy is legendary. I still love the way all the players 'wai' the fans after the game and away fans are always welcomed like returning brothers by the home fans - well they are in Div 2 anyway.

CHONBURIAN 12

Just to clarify: are you asking about the Thai league or the Thai language?

hahahaha

Back to the topic, I'm a 37 years old Thai guy who was a Manchester United's fan since 1982. And I had nothing to do with Thai football, except the most talented Thai player is Piyapong Pew-On, until 2 years ago.

I remembered it was a normal afternoon when I had a coffee with my girlfriend while discussing about our free time. I had a newspaper which said Chonburi F.C.'d been gonna have a AFC match that evening. We went to Supatchalasai Stadium to witness a Thai victory over a Australian team.
And since then, we became the CHONBURIAN 12.

I guess 20-30% of Thai football fans watch Thai football (just my opinion). I like to compare Thai football and English football (which is most popular in Thailand) in the same way I saw Thai Soap Opera Vs Hollywood Movie.
I never expect to see Edward Norton or the EXTREME Computer Graphics in Thai Soap, and I never expect to see the Ronaldo's trick in Thai footbal either.

Then why I love Thai football?

The first reason ..it's football!!
I never understood how the Mancunian feel when the Glazers came taking over MUFC., I never understood why the Mancunian chose to establish a new football club instead of being a fan of American MUFC.
But being a Chonburi's fan, teach me how and why.

The second reason ..it's Thai!  Wink

I don't know it's the answer you'd expected or not, Azzurri. But it's how I feel about Thai League.

I am seriously wondering if PEA goalkeeper was genuine in his efforts in this game, he's normally great.

I remember walking all the way from Ekkamai - this was pre Sky Train - because the roads were absolutely choked.

So, if you recall seeing a sweaty bloke wearing a *rude word* Pistols t-shirt, that was me Smiley

There's got to be a connection between Thailand and "cheap holidays in other people's misery" but I fear I'm drifting from the original topic somewhat!

Hey SS, it's interesting that your opinion of football here based on many years of experience, is almost identical to my first impressions from my first match last week.

I guess that shows we are correct? :-)
