The draw for the AFC Cup is on Monday 12th.

Chonburi will be paying particular attention.

The sides they could possibly meet in the group stage are:

Home United (Singapore)
Binh Duong (Vietnam)
Hanoi ACB (Vietnam)
South China (Hong Kong)
Eastern AA (Hong Kong)
Club Valencia (Maldives)
VB Sports (Maldives)
Kedah (Malaysia)
Johor (Malaysia)
PEA could also join that list if they are dumped out of the Champions League.

PSMS Medan of Indonesia and SAFFC of Singapore could also be added.

It's all a question of timing now. If the away game falls during my rather long Songkhran/Easter holiday, I'll certainly be going to Vietnam.

It's unlikely that I'll be able to go during term time. I might be able to make a case for the final Wink but I doubt my boss would let me have two days off for a group match Sad

It looks like a good draw for us and I will be very disappointed if we don't qualify for the second round.

Chances for PEA might not be bad as well, if they can manage to the group stage of the CL. It should be possible for them to reach the 2nd place after the Japanese. At least I think maybe more easy than for CFC last year.

Btw, I don't think that the trip to HK could be that expensive. Maybe equal to Hanoi.

Kedah are struggling in Malaysian Super League. Since Malaysian league stop foriegn guys playing they are starting to struggle.

Hanoi?  Well, to be honest, the better Vietnamese teams such as Nam Dinh and Binh Duong got crushed in Champions League last year, so i fancy chances there.

Eastern from HK are struggling in there domestic league. Eastern and Hanoi are more cup teams who can pull off cup shocks and have that bit of luck on their day. Kedah have been a power until the early part of their season now. Chonburi over the last 2 years have shown that they can sustain a campaign in a league format.

If PEA enter the AFC Cup, they could have a trip to Singapore, Vietnam and the Maldives.

The harder stages seem to be when you get to the Quarter Finals and face off against the West Asian teams. Something which will show just what level Thai clubs are at, if they can make it that far.

This year, the western side of the draw has former Champions League runners up in 2006 Al Karama, Iraqi clubs, whom would probably be in the Champions League if it wasn't for security reasons at home and Kuwaiti clubs who have made the latter stages of the champions league but have a bad football association.

Dreams of winning the competition might just be a bit far fetched as Thai clubs probably need that little bit more experience, but at least they're serious opportunities now to progress past Group Stages and get a feel for other teams more in our re-mit than ever before.

Chonburi FC AFC Cup Fixtures

Mar 10 Chonburi v Eastern Athletic

Mar 17 Kedah v Chonburi

Apr 7 Hanoi ACB v Chonburi

Apr 21 Chonburi v Hanoi ACB

May 5 Eastern Athletic v Chonburi

May 19 Chonburi v Kedah

Starting and finishing at home is definitely an advantage. I'm fully expecting us to qualify from this group. I still don't know whether or not we'll be allowed to play at Assumption but I don't really see why not.

It all depends what stage they get knocked out of ACL. If SAFFC also get knokced out then they can't play in Home Utd group, so PEA will filter into that.

So nothing decided until after play-offs

This is the first time in a long time that sat I watch the entire game of Thailand National Team.
What I saw was that Thailand deployed short passing game similar to what Vietnam did against them.
However, I belief Vietnam are better at it as passes are more crisp and there are more dicisive to where the ball will go next.
Having said all that, Thailand players stick with there game plan and did not colllaps at the end so that's certainly an improvement.

Your thought anyone?

Have to do with the following mate

Group G
1. Hanoi ACB (Vietnam)
2. Eastern Athletic (Hong Kong)
3. Chonburi (Thailand)
4. Kedah (Malaysia)

First match this evening.

Chonburi v Eastern Athletic

Looking forward to it. Hopefully a convincing win for Chonburi. I'm still annoyed that we're all having to trek up to BKK again. I don't really see why we can't play these matches at Sirinthorn.

I expect a very low turnout. Which is a shame because I reckon we'd pull in 5,000+ if we were to play at our own ground.

A terrible call by the AFC Sad

PEA in big win over Valencia

Quote
Action from the Valencia vs PEA AFC Cup match on Tuesday.
MALE: Thailand’s Provincial Electricity Authority shrugged off the disappointment of missing out on a place in the group stages of the AFC Champions League when they kicked off their 2009 AFC Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Valencia on Tuesday evening.

Falcao scored twice – once from the penalty spot – to give the Thais the perfect start to life in Group H, which they share with Singapore’s Home United and Binh Duong from Vietnam.

PEA took the lead after just 10 minutes when Lamnao was brought down in the penalty area and Falcao stepped up to convert from 12 yards out.

It took the Thais until four minutes from the end of the first half before they doubled their advantage, with Lamnao this time finding the back of the net after Jameel Jambe miss-timed his tackle, allowing the Thai striker to score.

Falcao went close to adding a third in first-half injury time and the visitors were almost left to rue that miss as Valencia reduced the deficit just two minutes after the restart.

A cross from Shifau found Nashid, who in turn nodded the ball towards Ibrahim Shiyam and he headed the ball into the empty net.

The goal woke the Thais up and both Panupong and Falcao went close, but Valencia managed to hold on.

However, their resistance came to an end five minutes from time when PEA finally claimed a third to put the result beyond doubt, when Falcao was first to react after the ball came back off the crossbar.

A comfortable 4-1 win for Chonburi against a very poor Eastern Athletic. If that's the standard of opposition we can expect in this competition then I will be disappointed if we don't win it!!

We really should have scored more.

Good support (what else?!) from around 1,500/2,000 fans.

Ruthless Chonburi break Eastern promise
Quote
BANGKOK: Thailand’s Chonburi FC opened their AFC Cup campaign with an impressive 4-1 win over Hong Kong’s Eastern Athletic at Supachalasai Stadium in Group G on Tuesday.

Kraisorn Pancharoen sent the home side on their way in the opening minutes before an own goal from Eastern defender Yang Xu put Chonburi two ahead at the break.

Wong Chun-Yue gave the visitors hope as he cut the deficit at the start of the second half, but Pipob On-mo and Panuwat Jinta responded to wrap up the win for the home side.

Vietnam’s Hanoi ACB and Kedah, of Malaysia also share Group G.

Chonburi, who had Thailand internationals Surat Sukha, Kosin Hathairattanakool, Natthaphong Samana and Arthit Sunthornphit in their ranks, started strongly as Pipob fired over in the opening stages.

But they were rewarded after just eight minutes as they opened the scoring as Eastern goalkeeper Yapp Hung-fai failed to deal with Ekaphan Inthasen’s cross and Kraisorn pounced to convert from close range.

Roared on by a passionate home crowd Chonburi came close to a second midway through the first half as Kraisorn fired wide before Yapp denied defender Jetsadakorn Hemdaeng as the home side pressed for a second as the half progressed.

But the Eastern goalkeeper was unable to stop Chonburi doubling their lead as visiting defender Yang tried to clear when Kone Mohamed, a first half replacement for Ekaphan, sent the ball in the danger area.

But the Eastern defender only managed to direct the ball on to the crossbar and Chonburi were gifted a two-goal half-time lead after the ball rebounded over the goal line.

Eastern responded after the break and were rewarded as Wong netted nine minutes into the second half to reduce the deficit.

But just two minutes later Chonburi restored their two-goal cushion as Pipob beat Yapp.

The goal seemed to deflate the visitors and Chonburi added a fourth with 14 minutes remaining as Panuwat rounded off a strong run with a well-executed finish.

Thailand’s Chonburi FC top the group after opening their campaign with an impressive 4-1 win over Hong Kong’s Eastern Athletic in Bangkok.

Kraisorn Pancharoen, an own goal from Eastern’s Yang Xu and second half goals from Pipob On-mo and Panuwat Jinta secured the win after Wong Chun-Yue had netted for the visitors just after the break.

“We did not know before the match how they would play. In the first half we were quite nervous but we got two goals,” said Chonburi coach Kiatisuk Senamuang.

“In the second half we put pressure on them and got two more goals which is good as I had told the players we needed three points.”

Eastern coach Chan Hiu-ming remained upbeat after losing to the team he tipped prior to the game as group favourites.

“It was very difficult match because it was the first game,” he said.

“I am satisfied with the result despite the defeat. Chonburi are a very strong team and playing against them will give us more confidence for the future.”

Good luck to PEA tonight. It should be an entertaining game.

I'm expecting Chonburi to win comfortably in Malaysia. It will be interesting to see Zico's first choice eleven.

PEA 2-1 Home United: PEA fight back for thrilling win
Quote
BANGKOK: Provincial Electricity Authority launched a thrilling second-half fightback to beat Singapore’s Home United 2-1 on Tuesday and extend their lead at the top of Group H in the AFC Cup.

Superb strikes from Narongchai Vachiraban and substitute Supakit Jinajai sealed a well-deserved win for the Thai champions at the Supachalasai Stadium after going behind to a long-range effort from Shi Jiayi after 24 minutes.

The Ayutthaya team looked dangerous throughout the first-half but spurned a succession of good chances against a Home United side that was always on the back foot.

The hosts had the best of the early action with Patiparn Phetpun and Narongchai firing just wide of the target.

Home United hit back in 11th minute when Cameroonian striker Kengne Ludovick found a gap in the defence and shot just past the upright.

PEA had a good scoring chance on 16 minutes through Satrupai Srinarong but they were made to rue their profligacy when the visitors took the lead against the run of play.

Shi finished off a neat attacking move when he fired a low shot on the turn from outside the area, which trickled into the bottom left corner with the goalkeeper beaten.

The Thai side battled hard for the leveller and almost found it on the half-hour mark when Brazilian Richard Falcao’s shot was blocked and Laotian Lamnao Singto’s follow-up header was deflected to safety.

PEA had the best chance of the half but were again frustrated when Falcao’s shot edged past the post after an inch-perfect cross from Jinajai.

But PEA moved into another gear after the restart and almost found the equaliser after 48 minutes when Falcao’s strike from 35 yards crashed off the post.

Their relentless pressure finally paid off on 52 minutes when former Thai international Narongchai’s potent free kick sailed into the top left corner.

With the visitors shell-shocked and inundated by Thai attacks, PEA grabbed all three points on 65 minutes when Supakit hit a sweetly-struck shot from the edge of the area into the top corner.

A good night for the Thai clubs.

The mighty Sharks also won, 1-0, away against Kedah.

We'll win this cup. Smiley

Both Kedah and Johor FC suffer defeats in the AFC Cup

ALOR SETAR: Kedah fell to their second consecutive AFC Cup defeat after going down 0-1 to Chonburi FC at the Darulaman Stadium last night.

Ivory Coast striker Mohamad Kone’s 32nd minute strike allowed the Thai outfit to maintain their 100% record in Group G with six points.

It was a miserable day for Malaysian teams in the competition after Johor FC also went down 1-3 to PSMS Medan in Group F.

Mohd Azuwad Arip gave Johor FC a 21st minute lead at the Jaka Baring Stadium. But a brace from former Selangor player Elie Aiboy and a goal by Leonardo Martins, all scored in the second-half, allowed the Indonesians to bag all three points.

The Canaries, who had lost 1-3 to Hanoi ACB in their opening Group G match, are now left with a huge mountain to climb to secure a top two spot in the group.

However, Kedah were thrown a lifeline when Hong Kong’s Eastern Athletic defeated Hanoi 3-0. The Malaysians now trail these two teams by just three points in the standings.

Chonburi failed to run over the Malaysian champions despite fielding six internationals and two foreign imports in their starting line-up.

Instead, it was Kedah who looked dangerous early on, with Badrol Bakhtiar’s low drive sending Thai national goalkeeper Kosin Hathairattanakool sprawling to make a save in the 2nd minute.

Chonburi’s first threat arrived in the 14th minute when Brazilian Anderson was allowed too much space to turn and tee up Teerasak Po-on. But the Thai midfielder shot wide despite having a gaping goal to aim at.

Chonburi shot ahead in the 32nd minute when Kone timed his run perfectly to beat the Kedah offside trap and coolly slotted the ball past Mohd Helmi Eliza.

Kedah should have equalised early in the second-half when Kosin was caught stranded off his line. But Badrol and Khyril Muhymeen both failed to capitalise after having their shots blocked by defender Surat Sukha.

At the other end, Jetsadakorn Hemdaeng beat Helmi from close range in the 76th minute but his attempt whizzed just wide off the upright.

Kedah pressed forward frantically in the closing minutes but were unable to make their possession count.

Does anyone know if many (or any) Thai fans are travelling to see PEA or Chonburi play their away matches in the AFC Cup?
