According to what I've been told the match on Wednesday kicks off at 5:00pm Thai time.

The game on the 28th has a 6:30pm start. Can anyone confirm this?

If this is the case it will mean a couple of mad dashes from work. The first to get in front of the tele and the second to get to the stadium.

The match schedule on the AFC website shows the start times of the games. I think these are all local times for the host venue.

If this is the case, the game on Wed will kick off at 5pm Jordan time and the game on 28th at 6.30 pm Thai time.

Jordan is 5 hours behind Thailand, so if my assumption about it being kick off at local time is correct, that would make a 10pm Thai time start for the match on Wed.

I'm also assuming that the matches will indeed start at the times specified on the AFC schedule - and that there hasn't been (or won't be) any local amendments to these.

Thanks bon-nirnam. Its an interesting site. I'm slowly building up a portfolio of Asian football websites and thats another now added to the collection.

Australia is playing Indonesia at about the same time - so I might be busy flitting between the TV (I assume the Aust game will get shown by Fox or SBS on TV here) and the pc!

Bruce (and anyone else who is interested), if you haven't already done so, check out jakarta casual's blogspot - there is a link to it on all his postings. There's loads about Asian football on there.

The bigscoocer.com website is also worth a shot.

Thanks Shark.
Yes - jakarta casual's blog is really good. I go there every day and I've even had the temerity to post a couple of comments.

Thanks for the recommendation re the bigsoccer website. I'll definitely take a look at it later. I already use Goal.com and I find its pretty interesting too.

Good luck to Thailand tonight. A win in Jordan and the Suzuki Cup will be a distant memory. I'm hoping that the Middle East sports channel I pick up will come good and show the match. Chok dee and all that!

Good result for Thailand 0-0.

Even better when Singapore got stuffed 6-0!!

Hopefully Iran will be feeling a bit *rude word*y now, so maybe we can catch them out.

Disappointing. I felt that Thailand didn't really perform last night. It's hard to recall any decent spells of possession or passing moves. And I thought we defended poorly in the first half  but there was an improvement after the break.

I know we went close a couple of times, including the shot that hit the post, but it's difficult to see where the goals are going to come from. We'll need to see a big improvement against Iran.

On the plus side, a point is a point and we kept a clean sheet.

Did anyone else notice that at the end of the match most of the Jordan team walked off without shaking hands? I only saw two of them make any effort to thank the officials and their opponents. Pretty poor I thought. I hope that someone from the AFC was watching.

JOR 0-0 THA: Reid pleased with away point
AMMAN - Thailand coach Peter Reid was satisfied to see his side open their 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign with a hard-earned point following a goalless draw in Jordan.

Both sides had chances to win the game at Amman International Stadium but it was the Thais who came closest to claiming the three points when Suchao Nutnum hit the post in the 28th minute.

It was a heartening result for the visitors following their AFF Suzuki Cup disappointment and Reid feels it set them up nicely for the rest of their Group E campaign.

"The draw is good for us because it's our first game and I hope that we can go all the way and qualify from the group to the finals," he said.

Thailand coach Peter Reid was satisfied with the point his side picked up in Jordan.
"I'm happy with the result, especially as it was against a strong team who put plenty of pressure on us throughout the whole game.

"We tried to close the gaps all over the field and managed to hold on until the end."

Jordan coach Nelo Vingada, on the other hand, was disappointed they could not convert their dominance into goals.

"I'm not happy as a coach and the players are also not happy with the result," said the Portuguese boss.

"We wanted to win for our fans, who are waiting a victory from us. We wanted to have a good start in the qualifiers and a win could have been good for us.

"We did everything to score a goal but things didn't go our way and we were not very lucky.

"We played with two clear strikers and we created a lot of chances but the final touch was missing," he added.

"The players produced a fighting performance and they managed to get the ball back but we just couldn't score."

"We were clearly the best in the game and our opponents tried to score from quick counter-attacks but our goalkeeper and defenders stopped them from doing so."

I supported 1 point for this match so it was satisfied me enough last night. I thought about Thana when I saw sometimes Jordan defenders performed didn't well. I think the reason that our defended game gone better because Jordan changed their game from wing to middle which our centerhalf was better than back. I prayed for Kosin for all game and he could do it well. There is very hard work waiting for us next match.

Is it just me, or do Thailand hit the woodwork in pretty much every game they play?
Here's a queston I'd like answering: When was the last time the senior side won a competitive match outside of South-East Asia? (not including the WCQ against Macau)

You have to go back to 2004 Vinnie, when we beat Yemen 3-0 in a World Cup 2006 Qualifier.

Since then, defeats and draws. Best result was probably the recent draw with Bahrain in June last year.

Leesaw recalled back to the squad for Wednesday's game:

Teeratep Winothai has been called up for a match with the Thailand national team. Winothai leaves after Sunday's match in Liege.

Thailand play at home to Iran on Wednesday 28th January in a qualification match for the Asian Cup. Winothai will return to Belgium on Friday, therefore missing the Cup match away to RC Mechelen on Wednesday 28th.

BANGKOK - Iran coach Ali Daei expressed satisfaction with his players after earning a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Thailand to maintain their early group lead in AFC Asian Cup qualifying on Wednesday.

Both teams played attacking football in a lively encounter in Bangkok, with Thailand carving out the best chances of the game either side of the break but both keepers pulled off a number of good saves to ensure the game ended goalless.

The draw kept the three-time Asian champions on top of Group E, one point clear of Singapore.

"We didn't come here for one point, we came here for all three, but we have to be satisfied with this result," Daei said.

"I had said before the game this would be a difficult match. We started well, better than Thailand in the first half. Both teams played good football and created good opportunities.

"My players played very well. Overall I'm very happy with the way they played today," he added.

Daei praised the hosts, who lie third in the table, two points off the top following draws from their opening two games.

"We can't win all our games. We can't win everything. Sometimes this happens in football," he said.

"Thailand played well, they created a lot of chances. I knew this was going to be tough.

He added: "They are one of the best teams in Southeast Asia. We've seen their games and they have had positive results.”

Thailand's English coach Peter Reid was just as delighted with his players' performance, and expressed confidence his side was capable of reaching the finals. The top two teams qualify.

"I still think Iran are favorites but we've got as good a chance as anybody else," he said.

"They are a top side, they are very difficult.

"The Thai players acquitted themselves very, very well. We defended when we had to and we tried to create chances and possibly created the best chance of the game."

The former Manchester City and Sunderland manager, however, criticised his team for giving away too many free kicks in the final third of the field but was happy with his team's position in the group after successive draws in their opening two games, the first away to Jordan.

"They were two really tough sides," he said.

"Overall I'm pleased. It certainly gives us a real good chance, a foothold in the group. It is a good start for us."

A good performance against a very strong Iran team. PR had obviously set out for draw, which is fair enough, but I felt if we’d been a little bit more adventurous we could have got a much better result.

I thought we defended a lot better than we have done recently and the free kicks mentioned above were more to do with the Iranians going down a little too easily and the ref being too eager to give them the decision, than the Thais being reckless.

Overall, I was happy with a point. A long break now but a couple of wins against Singapore should see us qualify.

A couple of other things. It was nice to meet a few of the TF Forum posters last night; Nigb, Vinnie, Morientes were all there. Hats off especially to Vinnie, Morientes and his friends who had all made the long trip down from the north east. I hope you all got back safely.

Finally, I was very disappointed with the attendance. We reckoned about 10 – 15,000 which is very poor. The silly kick off time probably didn’t help but I would have expected a lot more fans to be inside the stadium. Still, there was a decent atmosphere and the Iranian fans kept up their chanting from beginning to end!!

Arrived back in Korat at 2:10 am! It was worth it though. A more than creditable draw against one of the supposed best teams in Asia. It was good to meet up with a few people from this board and thanks to the Khon Kaen boys for the posters!
The weird thing about the kick-off time is that it said 7:00 pm on the ticket, so why the change to 6:30?

funny - the thais did exactly the same in jakarta!

i was in bkk at the weekend and there was a few iranians staying there. 7 am i was on my way to breakfast and there was one of them walking stark bollock naked down the corridor chugging on an ale

It was rather sad to see the camera shows stadium half empty and I thought it would have boosted Iranians.

I didn't see the level of confidence in the Iranians I have see in the past in a 50-50 ball which was good for Thailand.

Though I felt there still are lots of work to do in this ball possession through short passes, they were able to create up number on the Iranian almost every single possession and that was quite impressive.

There are two things here, in muy oppinion, and that one is two win the heart and soul of Thai football fans to bring them back to fill stadium especially for the game of this caliber. Second thing would be a couple of such performance against quality teams which will lead to solution for low attendance, I hope.

Ali Daei got ripped by Iranian fans back home big time. But, from what they have on the squad that shown up here they were lucky to walk away with one point.

The question remains, can Thailand build themselves upon this success?

They are now looking ahead to a friendly in Sendai Japan which is very ineresting. Sendai is in north-eastern Japan with current temperature between 4-7 degree celcius at this time of year and it could rain or snow on game day. It is a good expereince for players to learn how to play in such condition but it could also backfire on them.
Well, more like it could be too cold to pull a trigger and had a missed fire in the ammunition depot(defense).

Shark, I don't know what is the appropriate thing to say.
Starting one; easy.
Keeping it up to date; could be a big challenge.

I could just have a single page with bunch of redirecting links but I had too much free time (and don't always use it wisely).

I'll be there. Hoping my wife and daughter will come along, too. Daughter will be nearly eight months by the time of the match so she's long overdue her first international match (she's been to three Korat matches already  Grin ).
I guess you'll be there fairly early SRS if you're selling the fanzines - I don't mind helping out with that.

Is there anybody on here who is BKK based and would be prepared to buy tickets in advance for all of us messageboarders? I'm expecting it to be a sell out.

Also, any other volunteers to sell the fanzine? It's coming along nicely and already looks quite smart. Good quality articles too. Smiley

I was thinking about this last night. There'll probably be some spare seats up in The Gods but if the nipper comes we'll have pushchair etc. So I want to be in East Lower (the lowest tier in the huge uncovered side) which will definitely sell out. If anyone can get tickets in advance for me I would be very grateful. I'm sure I can chuck in a few extra baht for your trouble.

Well if other people bring the wife then I guess I will too.
Happy to sell the fanzine though I'm not the best salesman in the world.
I'm based in Nonthaburi so if nigb is closer then I'll be grateful if he picks up the ticket for me but if not then I'll happily collect for everyone.

All this is subject to finding a babysitter beforehand.

I'll try FBT, I live a 10 minute walk away. I'll get 15 tickets, I'm sure we'll get a gathering for the day and I know of a few people who may be interested too.

Two for me, then. I'm pretty sure eight month olds go free! East Lower if you can. Don't think they're on sale yet, though. Cheers for this, nigb. I owe you one.
