looks like the locals are getting into it, whats the atmosphere like there?
.....didn't see any farangs in the pics, or English language option on the website. I would have thought the farang retirees would be their bread and butter.

I think Pattaya Utd will have trouble prizing them away from their Beach Road bars and the lure of True Sports.

The second point is also sadly true of many Thais. It's understandable but still a shame that too many Thai football fans are more interested in Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea etc. than supporting their own leagues.

Yep, I also do like Liverpool, but they doesn't make thai team develop with just friendly match. What we need is development by local footbal team

They have some bold and ambitious initiatives that I've been reading on nigb's site. They need to get in that new stadium quickly though because the farang fans they seek won't get turned on by the Bang Phra stadium!

hm, I am not sure whether there will be a lot farang fans. Cause the stadium, old and new. They are simply to far out of sight or get recognized by them. On the upper side of Pattaya, normally no farang si to find there. But as they are building a lot of villages there with new houses, they may get there fans from there.

Not really difficult. You support the team that you've always supported, Chonburi FC.

I've supported Oldham Athletic for over 40 years and I'll NEVER change. They are MY team. True football fans support one team forever, regardless of how that team are playing, and don't change every five minutes!

Promotion wise and marketing wise they are doing very well. However, it's what happens on the pitch that counts. If they don't get some decent results early on I expect that it will be hard to get people interested - especially if the kick off times clash with EPL on the tele.

The "stadium" (Nong Prue, Vinne) is truly awful. I'm not surprised that all their advertising stuff only shows mock ups of the proposed 20,000 seater.

What about PEA Ayutthaya fans, if the management prove to be stupid as well as unprofessional, (they don't learn) the fans can be forgiven for not wanting to be PEA whores.

@ Vinnie, just saw that today. After that, I have to withdraw my previous post. I am very impressed about that level of marketing  and action plans. Thats very professional. This can be only good fot Thai football. Having, Chonburi as a archetype of how to build up a club from bottom to Champion, and having an archtype of how I have to do marketing, can only be good for the league. But I dont think that, as shark mentioned, they need to have good results and success very soon to keep the interest of the farangs. Cause the expats are living there, and will watch and support the games, they will stuck. I think the point is, how many of all those farangs are expats or just touris in the balance.

Help!! Has anybody seen our team?!!

The last time I saw them they were being bundled into the back of a van which then set off, at a very fast pace, heading south along Sukhumvit Rd!!!!

If anybody has any information on the whereabouts of Bang Phra Football Club please leave a message on here.

Thank you.

I live in England and take my holiday's in Thailand.  And I mainly visit Pattaya.  When I am in England I take a look at one or two Pattaya websites.  When accessing the websites I have noticed the following.
Pattaya Mail website:  Before Pattaya United were formed this english language newspaper never really mentioned Thai football in there sports section.  I always thought that this was strange because there are a lot of football fans in Pattaya's ex-pat community.  Also Chonburi Sharks and Sri Racha are just along the coast from Pattaya.
Pattaya-Addicts and Pattaya-Live websites:Before Pattaya United were formed the ex-pats who are football fans and are members of these sites never really mentioned Thai football. And I might be wrong but none or very few of the ex-pats would go and watch the Sharks or Sri Racha play.
Since Pattaya United joined the league the ex-pats living in Pattaya are going to watch them play.  And they are posting reports with photographs on the Pattaya-Addicts and Pattaya-Live websites.  Some meet up in certain bars in Pattaya and travel to the ground by mini-bus(s).  And I think they even go to some of the away matches.  The ex-pats even do postings in the websites inviting other ex-pats and holiday makers to go the games with them.
My last trip to Thailand was just before the current season got started.  I will be flying out to Thailand again in 4 weeks time and will go to Pattaya BUT I will still support Chonburi Sharks they were my thai team before Pattaya Utd were formed and will continue to be my team.
I think it's a shame that Pattaya Mail in particular never promoted Thai football in there newspaper/website.  My geography isnt great but I think Pattaya is in the same province as the Sharks and Sri Racha

Hi Blue,

I saw Pattaya United play a couple of weeks ago against Thai Port, and they did have a lot of farang supporters. Last Sunday night in Bangkok I saw a very drunk farang in a Pattaya United shirt celebrating a 1-1 draw against Chula United. I guess they are easily pleased! Wink

To be fair, at least now they've had a team and TPL football dropped in their laps they are making an effort to actively support their local club. I've always said it would be a good idea for Pattaya to have a football team because it's a large city with huge potential support. However, I don't like the fact that they have been allowed to start at the top. I really, really hope that they are relegated this season. And the following season. Then they can work their way up just like in a real football league.

When I first started going to watch Chonburi I lived on the outskirts of Pattaya (just a corner kick away from Nong Prue "Stadium") and would ride my motorbike to either Chonburi Municipal Stadium or Srinthorn for each home game. Because I was brought up following football and have lived most of my life away from my home town of Oldham I've always been used to travelling long distances to watch my team. However, as not everyone is as commited or as mad as me, I can understand them not being inclined to undertake such a journey (although it's only about 15 miles from Pattaya to SriRacha).

Also, it's not just foreigners who have suddenly discovered Thai football. The vast majority of new fans are locals who never had any interest in their domestic leagues before. I think it's great that so many people are now going to games. I really hope it becomes as much a part of the culture as it is in England and many other countries.

As for the Pattaya Mail covering Thai football, I'm not surprised that they didn't bother before. Their "sports" section used to be all about darts and golf. I haven't actually read a copy for about 10 years but I don't expect the quality of journalism has improved much.

Hey Shark, this reminds me on our discussion we had last year, where I stated my opinion about having or wondering why Pattaya didn't have a football club. ;-).

But if PU wpould be go dwon two more leagues, I am not dure whether they would have the patience to walk up the way again to the TPL. I think that in such scenario, they might sell the club.

Your last paragraph underlines my point. Being a football fan is all about supporting your club through thick and thin. My English team, Oldham Athletic, played in the lower reaches of the English Football League for 68 years before returning to the top division - we have since slid back down to the third level again - but, in the early '90's, we earned the right to play against M*n U*d, Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton etc by performing on the pitch. What's the point of having a league if you can just buy your way into the top flight or give up when things are not going your way?

I know it's ridiculous to draw comparisons between long established European leagues and the Thai League but the principles should be the same. Chonburi, Muang Thong, Samut Songkhram & SriRacha have done things properly. And other clubs are trying to do it the right way.

I went to watch Khon Kaen yesterday. They have passionate fans, attract large numbers to home games and are based in a big city, why weren't they allowed to go straight into the TPL like P*ttaya?

Until these sort of discrepencies are sorted out the Thai League will struggle to have any real credibility. And I'll continue to crticise P*ttaya U*d and BKK Gl*ss.

Pictures of Pattaya's new ground under construction here http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=769382&page=5
scroll down towards the bottom of the page to see the pics. The whole thread is pretty good, actually. I'm not sure who 'Napoleon' is but he seems to have a lot of pics of Thai stadiums.

A good win for your boys on Wednesday Alldo. It looks like the strikers had their shooting boots on. The first 3 strikes were fantastic!

I bet you wish they'd saved a couple of those goals for another game  Cheesy

I think this story was a wind up started by "The Spoof" website.

Yeah we all know that football gossip spreads like wildfire. 99.9% of it turns out to be untrue. Take Everton for example, this summer we have been 'linked' with over 100 players, and so far we haven't signed any of them Smiley. I blame lazy journo's. Most football websites seem to copy and paste stuff from other places without bothering to research the story.

Pattaya Utd could do with a result tomorrow. They are getting sucked back into the relegation battle (if the bottom 3 go down that is? I'm not sure of the latest situation on this).

PS, I hope you put in a decent peformance between the sticks!
