Thais frustrated Liverpool

"We had some chances, we were playing against a team that was well organised and they play quick," said Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez. "So you come to a new continent and conditions are different, always more difficult, but I was pleased with the performance of some players and also pleased to see the national team (of Thailand) play well."

Thailand coach Peter Reid, who starred for Liverpool's local rivals Everton in his heyday, was overjoyed with the result. "We passed the ball really well and it was great to get a good equaliser," he said. "Liverpool are a strong team and it was a great experience for the Thailand team to play against them."

The first thing that came to mind when I saw those pictures was Hajduk Split's Torcida, but a lot less hardcore.  Cheesy Grin

I watched the match on an internet streaming from Fox Soccer USA. The commentators were having a bit of a nightmare with the Thai players names. In the first half they used the players surnames which proving a bit of a mouthful, so in the second half they reverted to the much easier first names. They also got some of the names a bit confused, so we had the twins Surat and Suchao Sukha Smiley, and the attacking full back Suree Nuchnum Cheesy.

They seemed to be very impressed with the Thai team, especially Datsakorn and Sutee (who they made man of the match), and they even had a nice little chat about Chonburi FC during one stoppage in play!

Yeah I was watching the same feed. It was quite hilarious listening to the commentators, especially the Suchao Sukha mistake and thanking Kosin for having a short first name!

One a personal note, having travelled all the way from Australia to watch the Asian Cup in 2007, I now feel a bit disappointed that the attendance back then was nowhere near this Liverpool friendly.

The weather was the same, though. I got soaked that night as well!

The point was made earlier in this thread that it's depressing that Thai fans will turn out in force to watch these games but don't show the same enthusiasm for backing their national side. I've been to matches involving Thailand when the stadium has ben full - Singapore, Vietnam - and I've been when the place has been virtually deserted - a friendly against Iraq a couple of years ago only attracted a few hundred!

Hopefully, Peter Reid & Steve Darby will be able to build on their positive start and the fans will come in numbers to watch the Asian Cup qualifiers.

The increasing popularity of league football should improve attendances for national team fixtures. Chonburi, Muang Thong, Bangkok Glass, Thai Port, Pattaya and Navy Rayong all get several thousand turning up for every home game. Surely a lot of these new fans will also take an interest in National team affairs.

I'm actually in favour of the Thai team playing in different parts of the country. The locals in Phuket certainly turned out in force for the King's Cup and Korat's stadium would be a great place to stage an international match.

And, as much as it pains me to say it, the new ground in Pattaya looks like it could be in the running should FAT ever decide to play games outside Bangkok.

Absolutely. Certanly for friendlies, anyway. Chiang Mai, Phuket, Korat and Songkhla all have stadiums capable of holding international matches and attendances would undoubtedly be higher than in Bangkok.

I totally need to agree to both of your previous post.

With the increasing interest in the League, the interest in the Thainational team will increase too. A few years ago, when Thai played vs Germany, I think only around 20.000 showed up. And there had been a lot of Germans there. Game was held in December, so a high season time.

And, yes it also would be good to change the venues for the team. Also the other stadiums are smaller than than the Raja National. Which also would create a better atmosphere, having a nearly sold out crowd.

I think Germany is one of the few countries not having a Nationalstadium like Wembley. Our Mannschaft, is always playing in deifferent Parts of Germany. And e.g. if they play vs  countries like Luxemburg or Lichtenstein, they often choose to play in small stadiums with capacity of 30-40k. And if they play vs big rivals, they probably will play in Dortmund, Munich or Berlin. It works really fine, all games are sold out, it is very tough to get tickets. no matter who is the opponent.

I think it would be agood idea for Thailand, to promote the Nationalteam, but also promote the Thai League. Means to have marketing activites arround the Stadium, presenting the TPL and the other leagues. And of course also selling Thai League Merch. The opening of the TPL shop opposite the Rja stadium is a good first step. But they should open more shops on other locations. Like in Pattaya, Phukt, Chiang Mai, korat and so on.

I'm not sure if you're aware or not but in the 2005 season the Thai League travelled the country playing fixtures in a different town or city every weekend. I went to the games staged at Srinthorn.

It was an interesting experiment but I much prefer things the way they are now. I'd still like to see the national team play more outside of BKK. There's no reason why they can't play Asian Cup qualification games in Chiang Mai, Korat etc

I didn't meant the TPL should move around. Wink I had meant the Nationalteam of course, and the TPL should jump on make promotion for the TPL, where Thai Team is playing. E.g. Chiang Mai, Korat and so on.

From todays BKK Post :

England to play Thailand friendly next year
Writer: TOR CHITTINAND

England will play a friendly with the Thai national team in Bangkok next year, Football Association of Thailand (FAT) president Worawi Makudi said yesterday.

Worawi, who is in England as guest of the English FA, said he had talked to English Premier League chairman Sir David Richards who confirmed that England will come to Thailand.

The date for England's first-ever match in Thailand will be determined after the draw for the 2010 World Cup finals is made in December, Worawi said.

"It is likely that England will go to Thailand next year probably as part of their preparations for the World Cup," he said.

Oh dear, what have I done!!!

For quite sometime, I have been expressing my opinion regarding FAT staying on its feet.
I would like to see FAT find sustainable financial resource through licensing football activities, team sponsorship NT gears and possible football clinic to clubs and other organization.
The idea behind this is because I would like to see an end to the method of nominating a wealthy
person to team manager of NT in exchange for their $$$ support, like a little child.

But I didn't mean for our National Team to generate income for FAT by playing in tournaments against club teams. No, no, no, no... help!

Ayudame por favorrrrrr!!!

According FAM president, Ali Azim, they haven’t got detailed information on the teams that will be taking part in the competition.

Thailand draw with Syria in the rain ( 9 November 2009 )
Quote

Rain poured down for most of the match making the pitch almost waterlogged. That made it difficult for either side to play decent football and also kept the attendance down.

Teerathep Winothai missed a penalty for Thailand yesterday but then headed home the equaliser against Syria .

Thailand lined up with strikers Teerathep Winothai and Teerasil Dangda while Singapore-based player Therdsak Chaiman was on the bench for the game.

Thailand almost went ahead in the seventh minute when Suree Sukha crossed from the right and the ball rolled across the goal but no one was on hand to tap it in.

In the 22nd minute, Syria's Hamzeh Al Aitouni almost scored an own goal when his attempted clearance hit the bar.

Thailand should have gone ahead shortly after when they were awarded a penalty after Datsakorn Thonglao was fouled in the area. However, Teerathep Winothai scuffed his spot kick and it was saved by Mosab Balhous.

Syria went ahead in the 35th minute through a penalty when Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool was harshly adjudged to have fouled Abmad Deeb while jumping for the ball after a corner kick. Raja Rafe Abmad made no mistake from the spot.

After the break Thailand put on the pressure in search of an equaliser. They came close on several occasions before Teerathep made amends for his penalty miss by nodding the ball home from close range after a good cross from the left by Natthaphong Samana.

Thailand dominated the remainder of the proceedings but the score remained 1-1 at the final whistle.

Thailand's coach Bryan Robson said he was pleased with his team's performance. "We came back well and controlled the second half and were unlucky not to win," he said.

Robson said he was pleased with the performance of veteran Therdsak, who came off the bench, and Datsakorn Thonglao who dominated the midfield.

He admitted his team had still had to work on scoring goals as they were missing good chances.

Thailand will play the Asian Cup qualifier in Singapore on November 14.

It may only be a friendly tournament but FAT having been giving it the hard sell in the press and there is decent prize money at stake. They've moved all the games to Supachalasai so they're obviously expecting big crowds.

And now they arrange an international friendly on the same day as the deciding round of matches and the squads will be shorn of all the top players.

Where's the sense in that?
