Report from Guardian website: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/oct/28/englandfootballteamEngland will play a one-off friendly in Thailand next year, according to the country's football association. However, the English FA has played down the claims, admitting it does not expect the fixture to take place. Worawi Makudi claims that the FA board director David Richards said he was interested in a match against the Thai national team, now coached by the former Sunderland and Leeds manager Peter Reid. "He pledged to send the England team to play against us. Thailand will be the only destination on that trip," said Worawi. "I'm delighted to get the opportunity to watch England for the first time." He also claimed that the FA, which recommended Reid to Thailand, wanted to help football in Thailand "in every aspect". However, an FA spokesman said: "Further to comments made by Worawi Makudi, the FA today stressed that it does not expect to play Thailand in a fixture next year. While Sir David has confirmed he was asked about the possibility of England travelling to play in Thailand by Mr Makudi earlier this week, he made it clear to Mr Makudi that any fixtures requests would have to be discussed by the appropriate departments within the FA and Fabio Capello before any fixtures can be agreed. Sir David wishes to make clear that he did not agree to the fixture. "The England team's fixtures for 2009 are already arranged in principle and the only dates that could become available are in November 2009 - if England win the World Cup qualifying group and avoid the play-off fixtures. If England do find themselves as group winners, it is not expected we will play Thailand in November."

Statement from English FA website : Further to comments from the President of the Thailand FA that Sir David Richards has agreed that England will play in Thailand next year, The FA wishes to clarify the situation. An FA spokesman said: "Further to comments made by the President of the Thailand Football Association Worawi Makudi, The FA today stressed that they do not expect to play Thailand in a fixture next year. Mr Makudi is quoted as saying that FA Vice-Chairman Sir David Richards has agreed to such a fixture. "While Sir David has confirmed he was asked about the possibility of England travelling to play in Thailand by Mr Makudi earlier this week, he made it clear to Mr Makudi that any fixtures requests would have to be discussed by the appropriate departments within The FA and Fabio Capello before any fixtures can be agreed. This really was nonsense from Worawi. I mean, since when have England made that sort of journey during the season for the sake of a friendly? The LMA would be apopletic. It's not a rhetorical question, though. Does anyone know of an occasion when England have made a journey outside of Europe for a friendly during a league season? Has it ever happened?

I think we (England) played Argentina away during the season. However, the match was in Switzerland Does that count? I can certainly name a couple of English club sides who've played "meaningless" matches on the other side of the world during the season. But that's not really the same thing

The Thai national team will play a couple of friendly matches during the next few weeks. One will be in BKK and the other will be on "neutral" territory.

The latest information I have is that the Saudi game will be on the 5th Feb. in China. And the NZ match will be on 28th March. This second date is a Saturday so I expect we'll see all the TPL fixtures postponed on that date.

Just reading my email, and a friend of mine has told me that the game between Thailand and Saudi Arabia has been moved to Japan!!
Now, i understand that Saudi Arabia play a World Cup Qualifier against North Korea just a few days after our friendly, but surely its a bit absurd to be going all that way for a kick about?
Now, it's good to see that we seem to have a decent relationship with one of the better teams in Asia, but surely we should have declined this invitation and asked to play it in Bangkok at a later date. After all the upcoming friendlies against KSA and New Zealand don't fall anywhere near an Asian Cup Qualifier. I think we could have at least waited until October to get these friendlies in, before the Singapore double headers?

This game as I understood will be in the city of Sendai, Japan. But, now you have clarified something that was lingered in my mind. Why in Sendai, Japan where it is technically too cold for Thai footballers. Yes, this match is scheduled to play in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Japand(as closest to the ice burgs as it could for the Thais) They will be playing in a temperature between 4-8 degrees celcius with a chance of rain or snow (brilliant move by Thai FA) Cleary this will benefit Saudi as the weather in So. Korea will be similar to Sendai, Japan and in a good day Thai players could yield semi-pressure the Saudis will get from So.Koreans. It is an an ideal workout whichever way you look at it. It was the women up to now and now the national football team's turn. This maybe sound a bit too brutal of an opinion but it is what it is! I really hope Worawee get to read the preceding two sentences.

Full-time: Thailand 1-2 Saudi Arabia. 0-0 at halftime. Saudi Arabia scored two quick goals around the 65 minute mark, Teerasil pulls one back in the 89th minute. At least we scored!

AUCKLAND – The All Whites will begin their biggest season in 27 years with most of their big names on board, after Ricki Herbert named a strong 18-man squad for the March 28 friendly in Thailand. New Zealand’s match against Thailand in Bangkok is the first outing in a busy season for the All Whites with the June’s FIFA Confederations Cup and a home-and-away World Cup playoff the obvious highlights. New Zealand Football expecte to secure a second match in the region on April 1 to replace a friendly against Indonesia cancelled by the Indonesian FA for security reasons on Monday. Wellington Phoenix pair Ben Sigmund and Leo Bertos are the most notable absentees as both recently underwent off-season surgery to respective hip and leg injuries. Sigmund is almost certain to miss the Confederations Cup in June and Bertos is likely to face a 10-week recovery. Head coach Ricki Herbert said the Thailand trip was a great way to begin the All Whites momentous year that ends with another trip to Asia as part of a World Cup playoff. “It’ll be good to get 2009 underway. Thailand have recently drawn with Iran, so the game gives us a good cross section of where we need to be come October and November,” Herbert said. “Whilst some of the squad are at the back-end of their season and have had a bit of a break it’ll be really good to get the squad together again. “It’s good to have all the players on board and looking forward to a long a challenging 2009.” Belgium-based utility Christian Bouckenooghe makes his first travelling squad since March 2007, while uncapped Waitakere United fullback Aaron Scott – an unused substitute when an under-strength New Zealand side lost to Fiji in November – is given another chance to impress. “We’ve included Aaron Scott as someone we can have a little bit more of a look at, since we didn’t get to see him play in the Fiji encounter. “We would’ve liked to seen Kris [Bouckenooghe] during World Cup qualifiers but from an injury point of view we weren’t able to do that, so it’ll be good to bring him back into the fold now before we make further decision leading into the bigger competitions.” Blackburn’s Ryan Nelsen regains the captaincy – Ben Sigmund lead New Zealand against Fiji – and Tim Brown returns as vice-captain. Glen Moss is free to play in the South East Asian friendlies, despite being sent off in New Zealand’s last international against Fiji. As that game was a World Cup qualifier, the lengthy four-match ban imposed by FIFA will apply to World Cup matches only, ruling him out of the Asia-Oceania playoff in October and November, and the first two matches of either the 2010 FIFA World Cup or New Zealand’s 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign. New Zealand Squad to Thailand, March 2009 Goalkeepers: Mark PASTON (Wellington Phoenix – 17/0) Glen MOSS (Melbourne Victory – 9/0) Defenders: Kris BOUCKENOOGHE (Club Roeselare – 38/3) Andrew BOYENS (New York Red Bulls – 6/0) Tony LOCHHEAD (Wellington Phoenix – 18/0) David MULLIGAN (Wellington Phoenix – 22/3) Ryan NELSEN (Blackburn Rovers – 36/7) Aaron SCOTT (Waitakere United – 0/0) Midfielders: Tim BROWN (Wellington Phoenix – 17/0) Jeremy CHRISTIE (Wellington Phoenix – 15/1) Simon ELLIOTT (Unattached – 56/8) Chris JAMES (Tampere United – 10/1) Duncan OUGHTON (Columbus Crew – 23/2) Forwards: Kris BRIGHT (Panserraikas FC – 1/0) Jeremy BROCKIE (North Queensland Fury – 9/0) Chris KILLEN (Norwich City – 27/15) Shane SMELTZ (Gold Coast United – 21/11) Jarrod SMITH (Seattle Sounders FC – 13/0) Management: Ricki Herbert (Coach), Brian Turner (Assistant Coach), Clint Gosling (Goalkeeper Coach), Phil Warbrick (Manager); Roland Jeffery (Physiotherapist), Wade Irvine (Massage Therapist), Celeste Geertsema (Doctor). http://www.nzsoccer.com/plugins/newsfeed.cgi?rm=content&plugin_data_id=26851

The only criteria the AFC have for the AFC Cup is the playing standards.
Simply put, they don't care too much about this tournement as it does not make them money, the Champions League is there bread and butter.
All other teams in this competition play where they want to, for example Johor of Malaysia played on their home turf in front of 350 people. Al Muharraq, the current champions played in front of 1,000.
I think, personally, the AFC are not to blame, but FAT probably are, but after all, if we want to play Champions League then we have to get use to moving to BKK. Personally, i'd rather stay in AFC Cup until one of our teams wins it and then gains the right to move to ACL on the playing side rather than on any marketing side.
