Vinnie has a good point but it's still far better to have a variety of English team names rather than just a squadron of "Uniteds" IMHO.
When you think about it, most English team names are related to the idea of moving (rangers, rovers) or sport (athletic) or town size (city, county, town). Only a few take deeper roots.
What team names could Thai clubs use to emphasise their own roots, towns, etc?
e.g. Nonthaburi Province, Sisaket Farmers, Pattaya City, Chiang Rai Hills (a real team as Loko showed us).
Many teams from the south could perhaps draw on their ethnic and religious roots but of course that is a very sensitive and political issue right now.

Why not to be a bit more creative in names? Of course I understand that most of the clubs are looking to the EPL as it is the biggest and best league in the world. But why to make that out of it? Look at the J-League and the respective clubs. When all the clubs got renamed with the foundation of the new J-League, Serie A was the best league in the world, but you wont find that many italian names within a clubs name. Just a few as example: Cerezo Osaka - Cerezo means cherry tree in Spanish, which is also the flower of Ōsaka city Albirex Niigata - The team name is made from combining the star Albireo of the constellation Cygnus (the Swan) and the Latin word Rex meaning 'king' Júbilo Iwata - Júbilo means 'exultation' in Portuguese and Spanish Kashima Antlers - Antlers is derived from the city name, Kashima, which literally means "deer island" Shonan Bellmare - The name Bellmare is derived from the Latin "bellum" for "war" and "mare" for "sea". Shonan refers to a coastal area that includes Hiratsuka. ..and so on and so on. Thais can be very creative...so why being that simple? |

Chonburi will play a friendly against Vietnamese side Dong Thap to officially open their 'new' stadium, Chonburi Municipal Stadium. Dong Thap, who finished 3rd in the last V-League, are also playing other TPL clubs during the visit to Thailand.

Clubs like Chonburi have football at the heart of the club - ok they have a politician behind them but like at Pattaya, football is the priority. The sharks will have staying power and will keep going over the years. I think the Buriram phenomenon could well fade away somewhat after a couple of years- at the moment its Newin's play thing but if you look back at past endeavors he'll soon get bored. Maybe he'll prefer getting involved at Leicester City long term or maybe even running the country - 70% of their fans are totally clueless about football and just enjoy the dancing, free food and their "ang paow" - this cannot be said for the Chonburi fans. If you ask me the Chonburi model is the sustainable one.
I think we'll need to give the league around 5 years to settle down but I still think Chonburi are doing it the right way.

I completely agree with that statement from SRS. Chonburi were the first club to get decent home and away attendances and prove that Thais will go to watch their local side play under the right circumstances. PEA Ayutthaya took their lead in 2008 also attracting large and vociferous crowds. On the back of the successes of Chonburi and PEA (and with a prod from the AFC), the TPL was successfully relaunched for the start of the 2009 season thus spawning recent developments. |

About "people" in Pattaya I have lived here for over 15 years and I work for an international company with 28,000 of the Thai people that I apparently know nothing about - probably 70% of them are issan people I expect - I speak fluent Thai - I actually live in Bangkok. I lived in issan for four years and know the place well. Open your eyes to what is going on at Buriram - enjoy the football but don't be so naive about the reason behind the club - it is a political machine - do some research on your beloved leader.
