Chonburi League Latest: Kuala Lumpur: Eight football clubs in Thailand’s Chonburi province are setting their sights on becoming the pioneers in the Chonburi Elite League which will be launched on October 23, 2010. The clubs are now in the midst fulfilling the criteria and submitting the necessary documents to AFC by September 15, which is the prerequisite to joining the elite league. The clubs are Muangchon United, Chon Chai Wonderers FC, Sattahip Borough FC, Siracha Athletics FC, Banglamung Rovers FC, Assum Novads FC, Banbueng FC and Ko Chan County FC. Two of these teams will be pitted against each other in the inaugural match scheduled to kick off at 4pm at the Sansuk Stadium, after the league’s opening at 3pm. The logo and name of the league will be finalised by Chonburi FA by the end of September. In a letter dated September 6, 2010, to Football Association of Thailand, AFC informed that the Vision Asia assessment visit to Chonburi on Sept 1-4 was very successful. “While there are still a number of areas to be fulfilled by the clubs in order for them to qualify for the Chonburi Elite League, AFC is confident that Chonburi FA and the clubs concerned will meet the deadline set on September 15,” the letter said. Vision Asia is AFC’s plan to raise the standard of football across the continent at all levels. The programme takes in 11 elements of football development, including administration, coaching, refereeing, clubs and competitions. The development of an elite league is part of the AFC Vision Asia programme to help improve football in member nations and their respective provincial football associations. http://www.the-afc.com/en/football-development/vision-asia/30300-eight-clubs-set-sights-on-chonburi-league

That's really quite sad. Come on Thai clubs, draw on your own rich culture when naming football clubs. Don't adopt a name from the other side of the world that has little or no meaning over here.

Ko Chan is an island, is it not? Why not 'Ko Chan Island F.C'? Why bring in the nonsensical 'County'?

Vinnie, Vinnie, Vinnie!!! ATHLETIC means something the whole world over. And it especially means something in SriRacha - it means someone has seen my graffiti in Robinson's car park for one. Totally agree about the other names, though.

Now you're just being silly. No one would call a club that. Whilst we're on the subject of ridiculous names, earlier in the season, I had to stop BG from making a 25m x 20m long flag with 'Spirit of Greenland' emblazoned on it. I had a real job trying to explain to them how ridiculous and embarrassing it would be, but after an hour or so of talk and lots of translation by my wife, they finally conceded that I might know a little more about the English language than them and they scrapped it and just made the green and white one that they pull over after we score a goal. A few wouldn't let it go though and have the 'slogan' as their signature on the BG web board.

Ok sharks fans - enjoy the game tonight - we've got a lot of players out but we'll be there giving 100% if your players work hard and show commitment you should beat us but any lack of effort/cohesion like at Bangkok Utd on your part and we'll be there to take advantage. Let battle commence - a few of us will be meeting in the Pussy Cat club (it's not as bad as it sounds and is just a normal sports bar really - with about ten ugly hostesses who leave you alone) at 5pm. Carry on down Ngen Plub Wan road from the ground for about 1km and its on the right hand side - great English food and cheap beer. We'd love to share a beer and talk football (is there anything else in life) - hope to see you!!!! Up for the Cup!!!!!!!!!!

What did you think of your first visit to the LEO, SRS? It's a real shame the Pattaya incident has meant that away fans have had to be moved down the end. It always created a great atmosphere when the away fans were in the middle, but we could still hear you all

Yesterday was a very good example of where being at the game beats watching on the TV tenfold. The atmosphere was great, plenty of noise, both teams were trying to break the other down and there were some decent chances despite the 0-0 scoreline. All in all a good evening's entertainment.

Thanks, Loko. No need to worry. I was dreaming of the past (as John Lennon and Bryan Ferry once said. Although it could be argued that the latter was cashing in on the former's death, when he said it.) http://www.clubwebsite.co.uk/chonburifc/club_news.pl?news=415536

And only this week Worawi has been ably demonstrating how well he knows 'every twist and turn of running a national football body' by organising and announcing an international friendly tournament that clashes with the FA Cup final.

Did you make it to this game? Fair reports from the two games. Pretty much the same as what I wrote for both. Although I have to be honest, I didn't see the penalty incident, no idea what I was doing at the time because it would have been right in front of me, but for whatever reason I missed it. Both games had cracking atmospheres.

I was surprised it wasn't given. I think it was the first shoulder-to-shoulder type challenge the ref had let go all match (some legit, some not). Interestingly, he didn't award a free-kick for another challenge of this type for the rest of the game.
I thought Chonburi looked better at halftime, but it was pretty even (a draw would have been a fair reflection), and the Sharks didn't really seem to have much up front when they needed an equaliser.

Are you coming up SRS? It's a 5 minute walk from work for me, and I'm bringing a couple of (TPL) virgins along.
Or will you be watching the Blue Marlins wrap up the title?

As I don't officially finish work until 4:00pm, it will probably be the latter rather than the former.

Very good report and a hearty thanks to the sharks for beating Thai Port - this sets us up nicely for our home game v Port on Saturday. The Pattaya game at Police was that awful a few of us discussed legging it over to Klong Toey for the second half but the rain and maybe a tad of common sense stopped us.
