Thunder could run away with TPL title Buriram PEA are the only unbeaten team in the Thai Premier League this term. Following their fast start to the season, the Thunder Castle are hot favourites to win their first-ever league crown.
This is only their second season under the name Buriram PEA. They were champions a few years ago when they were Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) and based in Ayutthaya.
Political heavyweight Newin Chidchob took over the club last year and moved them to his home province in the Northeast.
Buriram PEA finished second in the TPL last season and Newin has vowed to steer them to the title this year. They also finished second in the League Cup last season.
Many journalists believe this could be Buriram PEA's year although there is still a long way to go.
Buriram began this season with an impressive 2-1 win over title contenders BEC Tero Sasana. They have beaten Chonburi FC 3-0 and earned a scoreless draw at defending champions Muang Thong United.
Their only setback so far has been a 1-1 home draw with Insee Police United.
Why the Thunder have been on fire this season?
Football writer Komkrit Napalai of Komchadluek newspaper, said: "Buriram PEA have a squad good enough to win the TPL this season. They have several good local and foreigners and receive good support from their chairman [Newin]."
Their new signings Franck Ohandza of Cameroon and Frank Ancheampong from Ghana have formed one of the most lethal strike forces in the league.
"Our foreign players are really good. We did not just sign foreign players because they are foreigners," said Newin.
Ancheampong is a highly-rated player. He has feautred in his country's Olympic team and is dubbed "Ghana's Messi".
Other new players have also played well including midfielder Jakkaphan Kaewprom who moved from Muang Thong United to his native province.
In the heart of their defence is Teerathorn Boonmathan. He is a member of the Thai Olympic (U23) team and is expected to be a future star for the full national team.
Club captain Suchao Nutnum and Rangsan Vivatchaichoke have also been in good form.
Their goalkeeper Sivaluck Therdsungnern may be ranked behind Muang Thong's Kawin Thammastachanan and Chonburi's Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool but he has kept a clean sheet for 630 minutes.
He last conceded a goal in Buriram's 1-1 draw with Insee Police United.
Buriram have one of the country's best coaches in Attapol Bussapakom, and it was Muang Thong who gave Buriram a leathal weapon.
Attapol guided Muang Thong to win their first-ever TPL title two years ago. The Kirins then surprisingly moved Attapol upstairs. When Attapol received an offer from Buriram, he quit Muang Thong.
Buriram PEA are building a new stadium. With a capacity of 24,000, it will be the biggest privately-owned stadium in Thailand.
It is expected to be complete in June and Newin plans to officially open it with a bang by inviting English Premier League side Arsenal and Championship club Leicester to play there.
Surely, Newin has played the most vital role in Buriram's rise. He cannot take part in political activities (at least in public) because he is serving a five-year ban from politics so he has time to stay with the team.
But as the election is drawing near, Newin may have to help his associates (certainly not in public) and may not have time to look after the club so it is interesting to see how Buriram will fare during that period .

Buriram PEA back on top Hot favourite, Buriram PEA returned to the top of the Thai Premier League standings last night after edging TOT SC 1-0 .
On target for the Thunder Castle was Frank Acheampong from Ghana who scored the only goal of the game in the 15th minute.
Although Buriram controlled most of the match they could not add to their goal tally.
However, the win was enough to put them back on top of the league, three points ahead of Chonburi.
After sacking English coach David Booth during the week, Si Sa Ket put on a fine display yesterday, defeating the strong Pattaya United side 2-0 at the Si Nakhon Lumduan stadium.
With Brazilian Reuther Moreira acting as caretaker coach the Kouprey got off to a good start with an early goal from Victor Amaro in the 18th minute.
On the stroke of half-time Guy Hubert banged in another to make it 2-0.
Pattaya tried to fight back with Gabriel Obatola coming close, but Si Sa Ket goalkeeper Ruben Samen pulled off a fine save.
Si Sa Ket managed to hold on for just their third win of the season and three valuable points.
TTM Phichit suffered a disappointing defeat when they went down 2-1 at home to Osotspa M-150 Saraburi.
Osotspa took a two-goal lead in the first half through Lazarus Kumbi (34) and Cleiton Silva (44).
Phichit came out strongly in the second half and Korea's Shin Hyun Ho pulled one back, but they could not find the equaliser.
The remaining matches saw two goalless draws between Army and Insee Police at the Army stadium, and the Navy and Thai Port in Chonburi .

Good for those players to get a realtime experience and to have come away with a victory must have made the coach feel good all around. Even die-hard fans could appreciate the result and the process, I am certain.

Please excuse any ignorance over Thai Football shown in this post. I have not had time to read all the threads. I know the fixtures were changed several times around the start of the season, but I have not seen if they have been left constant since then. I notice that the final series of fixtures are scheduled for 25 December (Premier) and 24 December (Division One).
How confident are those of you with close knowledge, that the fixtures will be played on these dates.
Apart from these matches, do you expect any other football in Thailand, or indeed and other ASEAN country in the final two weeks of the year?

In Thailand: It's fairly certain the league will still be running in December. TPl and Div 1 are taking a break in November to allow for the ASEAN Games and World Cup qualifiers in that month.
The Regional League (Div 2) playoffs will probably finish around the same time (they'll run for 10 weeks after the leagues proper end in October).
Also, the FA Cup final is scheduled for mid-Jan, so it's likely the semis, at least, will be in December.
There's also rumours of expanding the league to 20 teams for 2012, so there may be more playoffs immediately after the end of the season around New Year. (last season's playoffs went till about 20 Jan)

Buriram crush TOT SC, Port sink Navy Anucha Kitpongsri of Chonburi jumps to avoid a tackle from a Chiang Rai player. Buriram PEA extended their lead at the top of the Thai Premier League to nine points yesterday thanks to a 4-0 victory against TOT SC.
The Thunder Castle were by far the more attacking team and were rewarded for their adventure with a comfortable win at TOT stadium.
Herman Ekawalla scored the first goal after 13 minutes to set the tone as TOT SC rarely threatened.
Buriram's lead was doubled close to the interval when Frank Acheampong found the back of the net.
He then added a third close to the hour mark to put the result beyond doubt before Franck Ohandza conjured up a fourth for the league leaders as TOT SC's afternoon went from bad to worse.
At PAT stadium, hosts Thai Port FC defeated Siam Navy FC 3-2.
In front of a healthy crowd, Ekapoom Potarungroj scored the first goal from close range after just seven minutes but the Navy equalised in the 19th minute thanks to a finish from Paolo Barbosa.
Port soon regained the lead though and took a 2-1 advantage into the break thanks to Jedsada Ngarm-muang's clever header.
In the second half, Port appeared to take control of the game and they scored their third goal as Ekapoom grabbed his second of the match. However, Navy did not give up and reduced the deficit thanks to a Pisarnsin Sumin-inn finish but it was too late as Port held on for the three points.
Port remain in 11th place with 33 points while Navy are third from bottom with 23 points.
At Mae Fah Luang stadium in Chiang Rai, hosts Chiang Rai United edged Chonburi FC 4-3 in a thrilling contest.
United's four goals came from Wasant Natasan (13 and 59), Julian da Silva (65) and Sanong Chaiprakom (79) while Chonburi FC responded with finishes from Pipob On-mo (49 and 71) and Ney Fabiano (69).

Buriram storm ahead Barring a complete collapse in the home stretch, Buriram PEA should win their first Thai Premier League title after the Thunder Castle sealed a 1-0 win at Sri Racha yesterday.
Buriram's campaign was boosted by second-placed Muang Thong United's slip-up at Khon Kaen who came from two goals down to snatch a crucial 2-2 draw in their fight against relegation.
Buriram are now 16 points ahead of the defending champions who have had an unimpressive run lately.
At Suzuki stadium, Buriram squandered a lot of scoring chances before Franck Ohandza gave the visitors the lead just before half-time.
It was still a one-sided affair in the second half as Sri Racha failed to repeat their brilliant performances which saw them beat Buriram twice last season.
At Khon Kaen stadium, Muang Thong looked on course for an easy win when Anon Sangsanoi put them in front after just nine minutes.
Muang Thong seemed to have bagged the three points when Teerasil Dangda made it 2-0 in the second half.
But the Dinosaurs fought back spiritedly and scored twice in the final two minutes from Saksit Yuencheewit and Choke Sukkaew.
At Samut Songkhram stadium, SCG Samut Songkhram still have to fight to avoid the drop after losing 3-2 to TTM Phichit.
SCG got off to a fast start when Thana Sripandorn opened the scoring after just six minutes.
TTM equalised through South Korea's Kim Joo Yong on 24 minutes.
The visitors went ahead after 63 minutes through Kanuang Buransuk only for Frenchman Christian Hermann Zaro to equalise for the hosts.
But Kraikitti Inutane broke SCG's hearts when he scored the winner with three minutes to go.
At TOT stadium, TOT SC drew 0-0 with Si Sa Ket.

Thunder Castle beat Army 3-1 to claim maiden title with four games to go Buriram PEA beat Army United 3-1 last night to win the Thai Premier League title for the first time _ which could be their only crown under their current name.
Goals from Anderson dos Santos (30), Ekwalla Herman (37) and Franck Ohandza (42) gave Buriram an easy win at Army stadium. Leandro dos Santos scored for the hosts after 33 minutes.
Buriram have 75 points with four games to spare as closest rivals Chonburi FC and Muang Thong United cannot overtake them.
The Thunder Castle could win a treble as they will meet Thai Port in the League Cup final and are in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
Winning the league is a huge success for the Thunder Castle who won the title in only their second season in the top flight as Buriram PEA.
It is also a dream come true for club chairman Newin Chidchob who took over the team _ then Provincial Electricity Authority _ last year. He moved the club, who won the league crown in 2008, from their base in Ayutthaya to his home province of Buri Ram.
After the takeover, Newin made it clear that his aim was to help the team win the top prize in Thai football.
"Our ultimate goal is for the team to win the Thai league title," Newin said at the time.
Newin has brought in several fine players including Brazilian Anderson dos Santos and forwards Ohandza of Cameroon and Frank Acheampong who is dubbed "Ghana's Messi."
He also built a 24,000 seat stadium in the province called New I-Mobile which is the country's biggest privately owned stadium. The stadium officially opened earlier this year.
However, the takeover infuriated PEA fans in Ayutthaya who burned Newin's effigy in protest, and it was reported that the move might be linked to a wider political scenario.
The electricity agency is under the Interior Ministry which was then under Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul. Chavarat is Bhumjaithai Party leader of which Newin is widely known as the de facto chief and Newin is being suspended from politics.
Now that his men are not in the coalition government, it has been reported that the Provincial Electricity Authority wants to regain ownership of the club and move them to another province.
It is believed that Buriram PEA will merge with their sister club Buriram FC, run by Newin's wife Karuna, and become Buriram United.
Buriram FC have gained promotion to next season's top league and if both Buriram PEA and Buriram FC are both in the TPL at the same time, there could be legal problems.
In yesterday's other matches, Sri Racha drew 2-2 with Bangkok Glass, Pattaya United defeated Chiang Rai United 3-0 and TOT lost 3-2 to TTM Phichit.

Buriram PEA, the champions of the Thai Premier League 2011, will merge with the winner of Thai First, Buriram FC to become Buriram United.
The FA of Thailand (FAT) also announced this week that in 2012, the number of registered foreign players will be cut down to five from seven currently.
“Each TPL side will be allowed to have up to five foreign players on their books with a maximum three non-Asian players and one Asian on the pitch at the same time,” said Vichit Yamboonruang, the chairman of the TPL.
The new season will kick off with the King’s Trophy which will see double winners Buriram taking on league runners-up Chonburi FC on 11 March.

Siam Navy sink to Division One after loss TOT SC striker Kone Mohamed, left, scores one of his two goals against BEC Tero Sasana. TOT won 3-2. Siam Navy were relegated after losing 2-0 at Sri Racha on the final day of the 2011 Thai Premier League season yesterday.
Siam Navy now join Sri Racha and Khon Kaen in Division One as the other two relegation contenders TOT SC and SCG Samut Songkhram both won.
TOT SC edged BEC Tero Sasana 3-2 and SCG secured a 3-1 win at Army United.
At Suzuki stadium, hosts Sri Racha sent Navy down with goals from Attapong Nooprom after 12 minutes and Cristiano Lopez in the 50th minute.
At Army stadium, Chaiwut Wattana gave SCG the lead after just two minutes but Thanakorn Dangthong equalised soon after.
SCG then went ahead again after 22 minutes through Napat Thumrongsupakorn as Samut Songkhram took a 2-1 lead at half-time.
Napat then added another five minutes after the interval as the Mackerels won comfortably.
At Thephatsadin stadium, TOT SC raced into a 2-0 lead early in the second half with goals from Kone Mohamed and Prakit Deeprom.
Mohamed then gave TOT a 3-0 lead after 75 minutes but just as it seemed that TOT were heading for an easy win, BEC gave them a scare when Teerathep Winothai scored twice in the last six minutes.
However, TOT fended off BEC's late charge and held on for the win.
At Mae Fah Luang stadium, hosts Chiang Rai United held champions Buriram PEA to a 2-2 draw.
Wasant Natasan and Gilson Dias scored for Chiang Rai while Buriram PEA scored through Suchao Nutnum and an own goal from Pichai Preechachao.
In the other game, Pattaya United edged Muang Thong United 1-0 with Ittipol Poosup hitting the winner after 58 minutes.
