This stadium was built
to mark the 700 th anniversary of the founding of the
city of Chiang Mai in 1296, though it was inaugurated a year earlier
than that historic date so as to host the 18 th South
East Asian Games. It was the first time that this sporting event was
held outside a capital city. It was also the setting for several
international matches at the 1998 Asian Games.
The stadium has a
capacity of 25,000, with more than 4,500 covered seats, and an
athletics track. It is located in the Chiang Mai complex, which has
facilities for a wide range of sports. It is the home ground of
Chiangmai Calibre, a club which competes in the Thai regional
league.
