Buriram searching for treble glory (04/02/2012)

Buriram PEA will be gunning for a historic treble when they meet Thai Port in the League Cup final today.

The match at Supachalasai stadium will be shown live on Channel 3 at 5:30pm. It is a repeat of last year's final in which Port upset Buriram PEA 2-1.

Having won the Thai Premier League and the FA Cup, the northeastern side are heavy favourites to lift their third trophy of the season.

Buriram coach Attapol Bussapakom is brimming with confidence and believes his men will win.

"We lost to them in the final last season but we will not let that happen again," he said.

The Thunder Castle will be without "Ghana's Messi" Frank Acheampong who is suspended but Attapol said his absence would not be a major setback.

Acheampong is likely to be replaced by Kirati Keawsombut.

And although he is confident, Attapol has warned his players that Port can hit them on the counter-attack as they did last season.

Thai Port has been hit by financial problems but still managed to finish seventh in the TPL following a stuttering start to the season.

Port coach Thongchai Sukkokee said: "We are the underdogs but we are ready for the match.

"It is difficult to beat Buriram PEA but we believe we can do it."

Despite the club's economic position, the players have received part of their salaries and they are happy with this - although the club still owe them some unpaid wages.

"The players' morale has been boosted after they received their salaries," Thongchai added.

Tickets are available at the stadium from 1pm and cost 100-200 baht.

New FAT sponsor

The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) has signed a two-year sponsorship contract with Umay Plus worth 44 million baht.

FAT president Worawi Makudi said Umay Plus will pay the FAT 22 million baht a year for two years.

"Umay Plus will help in the development of Thai football. I would like to thank the company for its financial support," Worawi said.
