Second division player Sarawut gets surprise call-up (03/10/2011)

Second division player Sarawut Masuk has received a surprise call-up to the Thai national team ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia next week.

Thailand coach Winfried Schaefer said yesterday that he drafted the Jamjuree United striker into his initial 27-man squad after consulting his assistant Surachai Jaturapattarapong.

"Surachai has followed his progress for over a year," said the German coach. "I want to give an opportunity to any player in any division if he is good enough."

Sarawut's biggest asset is his speed and he has to impress Schaefer during training if he is to make it into the 23-man final squad, Surachai said.Schaefer will cut down the squad after Thailand's friendly with Jordan on Thursday.

Thailand will host Saudi Arabia at Rajamangala National Stadium on Oct 11 in Group D of Asia's qualifying round for the 2014 World Cup.

After two games, Australia lead with a maximum six points and are followed by Thailand who have three. Saudi Arabia and Oman each have one with the top two teams from each of the five groups advancing to the continent's final qualifying stage.
