Calisto confirmed as Muang Thong coach (08/03/2011)

Bangkok: AFC Cup 2011 Group G leaders Muang Thong United have officially unveiled Henrique Calisto as their new head coach.

The former Vietnam coach has signed a two-year deal with the Thailand Premier League (TPL) champions and will be at the helm for Muang Thong’s TPL match with Thai Port on Sunday, their last domestic fixture before travelling to Singapore for their AFC Cup clash with Tampines Rovers.

Prior to the appointment of Calisto, Muang Thong were being coached by Technical Director Robert Procureur, who oversaw the Thai giant’s 4-0 hammering of Vietnam’s Hanoi T&T in their AFC Cup opener.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Callisto said that with over a decade coaching in the region he knows Thai football well and has vowed to adhere to the attacking brand of football expected at the two-time TPL champions.

“Through my experience in the ASEAN region I know Thai football very well,” said the 57-year-old, who led Vietnam to glory in the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup and club side Dong Tam Long An to the V-League title in 2005 and 2006.

“I have studied Thai football for a long time and I know Muang Thong and many of the players, especially the national team players.

“As coach of Muang Thong I am not just expecting victory as I am planning to create a team that enjoys playing exciting and entertaining football for the fans.”

The previous incumbent in the Muang Thong hot seat, Carlos Roberto de Carvalho, held the post for less than a month, but Calisto said he is well aware of the pressure of the job and is confident he will rise to the challenge.

“Every coach has pressure in their job. I have had 20 years experience in Portugal and ten years in Vietnam and I have passed every test so I can overcome the pressure.

“My target now is to make Muang Thong play at their best in every match and every tournament.”

Muang Thong United are next in action on the continental stage on Wednesday, March 16 when they take on Tampines, who also won their AFC Cup Group G opener by defeating Victory 3-1 in the Maldives .
