Chonburi defeat Port Sharks look impressive in their first league game of the new season (20/02/2011)
Chonburi FC got off to a good start in the Thai Premier League season with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Port FC at Chonburi stadium yesterday.
A good crowd turned up to watch the big clash between FA Cup winners Chonburi and the League Cup champions,
The hosts took the lead after just two minutes when striker Pipob On-mo banged the ball home from close range to put the Sharks 1-0 up.
Chonburi continued to dominate play with both Therdsak Chaiman and Ekaphan Inthasen coming close, but Port defended well.
The score remained 1-0 at half time.
After the interval Port came out in lively fashion and Jeerawat Makkrarom had a good chance but his shot was well saved by Sinthaweechai Hathairattanakool in the Chonburi goal.
Port continued to put on the pressure but the Sharks defence held firm, with Suttinun Phukhom and Chonlatit Jantakam being very solid at the back.
In the 72nd minute a free-kick by Chonburi's Therdsak hit the bar and as the ball rebounded Japanese player Kazuto Kushita was quickest to react to make it 2-0.
Port tried to put on the pressure in the last 20 minutes but Chonburi's defence kept them out, earning the hosts a confidence -boosting three points.
In the only other game Si Sa Ket FC were held to a 1-1 draw at home by the Navy FC.
The sailors took the lead in the 35th minute with an angled shot by Anuwat Sorncha.
Ten minutes later, Si Sa Ket equalised when an attempted clearance by a Navy defender hit Si Sa Ket striker, Piyawat Thongmaen and rebounded into the goal.
In the second half both teams had their chances but the game ended up a 1-1 stalemate.
There are no matches today but there will be full program next week
