Olympic team held in warm-up (17/02/2011)

The Thai Olympic side could only draw 2-2 with Turkmenistan in a warm-up match at Supachalasai stadium yesterday.

Thailand took the lead twice only for the visitors to get an equaliser on both occasions.

The Thais dominated for long periods before Krirkrit Taweekam opened the scoring after 38 minutes. Orazsahedov Vahyt equalised for Turkmenistan in injury time as the first half ended with the score at 1-1.

Thailand restored the lead after 68 minutes when Chalermsak Kaewsuktae scored from the penalty spot after Tanat Jantaya was fouled in the area.

The advantage was short-lived as Amanov Arslanmyrat pulled level four minutes later.

Thailand also drew 2-2 with Turkmenistan in a warm-up before last year's Asian Games. The Thais then beat them in the second round at the Asiad in Guangzhou.

Thailand coach Charnwit Phalajivin rued his men's missed chances and said the strikers must improve their finishing.

"We had several chances but our strikers lacked sharpness. If our strikers had been sharper, we would have won," Charnwit said.

"We conceded the two goals on the counter-attack, and this is another point we have to improve."

Thailand will begin their Olympic qualifying campaign against Palestine in Bangkok in the first leg of the preliminary round on Feb 23. The second leg will take place next month.

While Thailand are heavy favourites against Palestine, Charnwit warned his men not to underestimate any team.
