Muang Thong United seal TPL title (12 October 2009)
BANGKOK – Muang Thong United wrapped up the 2009 Thailand Premier League title with a game to spare after Yaya Soumahoro scored in stoppage-time to give them a 2-1 win over Osotspa.
The Cote d’Ivoire midfielder put the MTU one-up after 12 minutes only for Jakkrit Bunkham to level the match ten minutes before the interval.
Teersail looked to have given MTU an 80th minute lead but the Thailand international striker’s goal was ruled out for offside and just as it was looking like the big-spending Bangkok side’s hope of silverware in their first season in the top flight would come down to the final day of the season, Yaha rifled home the winner two minutes into time added on.
The victory gave MTU three point lead over Chonburi, who had kept their slim TPL title hopes alive with an ultimately academic 1-0 win over Navy Rayong, but Attaphol Puspakom’s side has a better head-to-head record against the AFC Cup quarter-finalists and will still win the championship if the two finished level on points.
Nakhon Pathom became the first of three teams to be relegated after drawing 1-1 with Samut Songkhram.
The Hunters took a 12 minute lead through Ivorian attacker Roland Guina, who is on loan from Muang Thong United, only for a 77th minute equaliser from former Phnom Penh Crown striker Jean Roger Lappe Lappe to consign them to first division next season.
