AFC to come to Thailand (October 12, 2006)

Officials of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will come to Bangkok next week to ensure that Thailand will be able to co-host the Asian Cup finals in July next year. President of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT), Mr Vijitr Getkaew and his deputy, Mr Chaiyapak Siriwat yesterday discussed the situation with Minister of Tourism and Sports, Dr Suvit Yodmani.

Dr Suvit said most of the discussion centered on plans for improving the two venues ''October 16-17, the AFC secretary general, Mr Peter Velappan will visit to discuss the situation,'' he said.

Mr Chaiyapak admitted that the AFC was concerned whether Thailand could still host the Asian Cup as there had been no renovation of the two grounds.

There is also some concern whether the Thai segment of the Swatch FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour will go ahead from November 1-5 at Karon beach, Phuket.

The organising committee still have not raised the 8 million baht budget necessary for hosting the event, Dr Suvit said.
