Reid looking for a win today (November 01, 2008)

HANOI : Thailand's national coach Peter Reid said his team is going for an outright win against host Vietnam even though a draw would be enough to lift the T&T Cup at My Dinh stadium tonight.

The match will kick off at 7 pm and will be telecast live on NBT (channel 11).

On Thursday night, Vietnam drew 0-0 against North Korea who Thailand beat 1-0 earlier in the week.

"It would be risky to play for a draw," said Reid. "I want our team to go out there and win. I think we can beat them."

Reid admitted Vietnam had a strong midfield. "Our players must make sure they do not give them too much freedom," he said.

It has been raining heavily in Hanoi and the Thai team had to train in the gym yesterday.

Reid said his players should be able to adapt to what is likely to be a heavy pitch.

"The players should be okay, " Reid said. "Sometimes they have to play in similar conditions in Thailand."

He said the only change in the team will be in defence with Nataporn Phanrit coming in for Arthit Sunthornpit who will be on the bench.

Vietnam coach Hendrique Calisto was also confident that his side would triumph.

"I watched the Thais play North Korea and don't think they have a very strong side," he said.

He believed that with strong support from the local crowd Vietnam would come out winners.

Thailand and Vietnam last met in the Asean Cup last year when Thailand beat Vietnam 2-0 in Bangkok and drew 0-0 in Hanoi.

The winning team will receive US$40,000 (1,360,000 baht) while the runners-up will pick up US$30,000 (1,020,000 baht).
