Reid says Thai players need fitness and stamina (October 09, 2008)

Thai players have technique but lack fitness, national coach Peter Reid said yesterday. The former England international signed a four-year contract to coach Thailand two months ago.

He has since watched several Thailand Premier League matches.

''Thai players have good basic skills. But their problem is fitness and stamina,'' Reid said. ''A player must be able to run 90 minutes and not 50 minutes. We must improve it.''

Reid's first assignment will be the TT&T Cup in Hanoi from October 28-November 1. It will be followed by the AFF Suzuki Cup (formerly Tiger Cup) in December and the King's Cup in Bangkok in January.

He said that after the Thai league ended on Saturday he would talk to his assistants Tawan Sripan and Chaiyong Kampiem before announcing the Thai squad for the tournaments.

Reid said he wanted a training camp in Phuket, Chiang Mai or Nakhon Ratchasima instead of Bangkok so the players would be able to stay focussed.
