Thailand held to 2-2 draw despite Teerathep's double (August 24, 2006)
Kuala Lumpur _ Goalkeeping errors proved costly as Thailand's Asian Games football squad were held 2-2 by Burma in the 38th Merdeka Cup at Shah Alam stadium yesterday. Despite two goals from livewire forward Teerathep Winothai, it was a disappointing result for Thailand who were expected to win the match.
Thailand took the lead in the 19th minute when Teerathep fired the ball home after a good pass from Nirut Kamsawat.
The Thai side kept up the pressure but Burma equalised in the 35th minute when Thai keeper Veera Kerdpudsa failed to hold onto a shot and Si Thu Win scored from close range.
Thailand retook the lead on the stroke of half-time when Teerthep latched on to a pass from Datsakorn Thonglao to make it 2-1.
It was the Thai team which dominated the second half but they did not take their chances.
They paid the price in the 70th minute when the keeper missed a cross leaving Si Thu Win with a simple goal to make it 2-2.
Thailand coach Charnvit Phalajivin said he was happy with the overall performance ''but I will change the goalkeeper for the next match''.
Burma manager Thein Aung said he was happy with his side's performance. ''We cannot beat Thailand as they are a strong team.''
In last night's late match Malaysia played Indonesia.
Thailand play their second match against hosts Malaysia tomorrow which will kick off 7.45pm (Thai time) while Indonesia will play Burma in the other match.
Thailand 2 (Teerathep Winothai 19, 45+) Burma 2 (Si Thu Win 35, 70)
