TOT scoop title (August 21, 2006)

The Telephone Organisation of Thailand (TOT) were crowned champions of the inaugural Thailand Professional League yesterday when they drew 2-2 at home with Surat Thani.

The draw turned out to be enough to clinch the title by one point as chief rivals Port Authority 2 lost 2-1 at home to Chanthaburi.

Although the league includes 13 provincial teams it was the Bangkok sides which took the honours. TOT received 10 million baht while Port 2 took home five million baht.

TOT made hard work of it yesterday and went behind when Mana Lukchum scored in the 44th minute for Surat Thani to take a 1-0 lead.

The hosts equalised in the 52nd minute through Kittipong Moonpong and they stormed into the lead in the 68th minute when Poovadon Sanglah was on target to make it 2-1.

Surat Thani kept battling away and grabbed an equaliser in the last minute with a goal from Aekkaluk Thammavisarn to make it 2-2.

Port 2 failed to take advantage of their rivals dropping two points when they found themselves up against tough opponents in Chanthaburi.

The visitors took the lead in the 44th minute with a goal from Pichit Ketsaro and went further ahead in the 63rd minute through Somchai Singmanee.

Although Port raised their hopes with a goal from Teerawut Sanphan in the 73rd minute they were unable to make any more inroads, losing 2-1 and having to settle for runner's up spot.

Nakhon Pathom took third place, finishing the season with a 2-2 away draw at Sakhon Nakhon.

Meanwhile, the Thai U23 team will leave for Malaysia today to participate in the Merdeka Football tournament in Kuala Lumpur from Wednesday to a week tomorrow.

They take on Burma on Wednesday, Malaysia on Friday and Indonesia on Sunday. The 18 players leaving for Malaysia are Veera Kerdputsa, Narit Taweekul, Kiatprawut Saiwaew, Thriti Nonsrichai, Prat Samakrat, Thewarit Julsom, Tada Keelalay, Suchao Nutnum, Nattapong Samana, Datsakorn Thonglao, Sarawut Jantaphan, Teerathep Winothai, Thana Chanaboot, Kraisorn Pancharoen, Noppol Pitafai, Nirut Kumsawad, Jakkrit Boonkum and Suree Sukha.
