Thai hopefuls put through paces; defeat in futsal final (May 19, 2008)

Iran won the AFC Futsal Championship when they put on a powerful display to beat Thailand 4-0 in the final at Nimibutr Gymnasium.

Thailand had beaten Iran 3-2 when the teams met in the KL World 5s three months ago, but it was Iran who controlled things last night.

Iran took the lead in the eighth minute through Majid Latifi and added a second in the 16th with a goal from Vahid Samsaee.

In the second half Samsaee struck again to make it 3-0.

Thailand were not helped when they were reduced to four men after skipper Panuwat Janta was penalised for a foul.

Iran rounded off the scoring in the 38th minute with a goal from captain Mohammad Reza Heidarian.

Japan claimed third place with a 5-3 victory over China.

All the semi-finalists have qualified for the Fifa Futsal World Cup which will be held in Brazil in September.
