Thailand aim to reach quarter-finals (June 15, 2007)

Thailand are aiming to reach the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup which begins in three weeks.

President of the Football Association of Thailand. Worawi Makudi said a quarter-final spot would be regarded as satisfactory.

Thailand are hosting one of the groups and face Australia, Oman and Iraq.

The Thai team are currently training in Germany with the emphasis on fitness.

''If we are the reach the quarter-finals the players must be able to run for 90 minutes,'' said Worawi.

The Thai team will play Borrussia Dortmund reserves tomorrow in their first match in Germany.

Coach Chanvit Phalajivin said he would play all his squad in the match so that everyone would have a chance to show what they could do. Deputy Minister of Tourism and Sports, Dr Nat Intarapana also chaired a meeting for the Asian Cup preparations.

He said the most important thing was safety and security. ''If anything bad happens it will spoil our reputation. We want to host more tournaments like this.''

Chairman of the Asian Cup Organising Committee, Mr Chaiyapak Siriwat said renovations were nearly complete at Rajamangala and Supachalasai stadiums.
